BB = Battleship CA = Cruiser DD = Destroyer CV = Aircraft Carrier

These are the designations of the US Navy. Other naval forces have different designations. WoWS players are calling the ships by these letters because it's far easier than writing "battleship". BB stands for battleship, DD stands for destroyer, CV stands for carrier vessel (so aircraft carrier), and CL/CA stands for cruiser, light and cruiser, armoured, respectively. Even today the US has these designations. For example, USS Nimitz has CVN-68, standing for carrier vessel, nuclear powered. Or USS Arleigh Burke has DDG-51, stading for destroyer, guided missile. And USS Port Royal has CG-73, standing for cruiser, guided missile. Sadly, there are no more battleships in service with any navy. It would've been a sight to see a battleship firing a full broadside. Sorry for the long post.

Its very sad to think how so many of them were wasted (Yamato, Nagato, even Haruna), but I take solace in knowing all the ships sunk during the war finished their missions gloriously like a true samurai

Tanzim Nawaz was surrounded by 2 destroyers in my kongo and managed to out maneuver their torps and kill both. Its all about no giving them a shot at your broadside and constantly changing course. A few he shells from a battleship will cripple a destroyers engine usually so theyre sitting ducks if you land a hit.

BBs have no problem one shotting cruisers but when it comes to dds you are toast if you have no cruiser escorts unless the dd plays really poorly then you have a shot.

So many early tier BB captains sail in straight lines at flank speed, and turn broadside to DDs. It was already second nature for me to turn the bow into torpedoes once spotted from playing Battlestations Pacific. Also, isn't fun to turn into a DD and give chase? They pop smoke, run, and forget all about trying to torpedo you.

The NOs would have been concentrating a total of 18 8" guns on the Kaga. It didn't have the shadow of a chance. The Kaga would only be able to bring 5 of its guns to bear. Also, keep in mind that Japanese armor wasn't very good.
