Kristiansen was the WR holder and beat her own WR in this race with all the effort she could muster as you could see from the strain on her face. And yet Budd, who was only 19 at the time, still was way, way ahead beating the WR by 10 seconds. Astounding. Her victories at world cross country in 1985 and 1986 were equally devastating. At her peak she was one of the greatest ever!

Zola's performance was amazing in this race. She literally looked like she was running on air. Such a shame she got that injury in 1986. Ingrid had a great season that year - it would have been wonderful to see them go head to head over this distance again.

This was a particularly good occasion because there was no pre-race publicity, and the many people present were genuine athletics fans. No rubish from the political world. Ingrid Kristiansen wasn't at her best here, and the distance is too short for her anyway. Nevertheless Zola Budd did the job with great skill for one so young.

Ingrid ran faster than her own WR in this race. It just didn't look so good because Budd was 10 seconds under the WR! It was a shorter distance for Kristiansen but she was the WR holder coming into this race. But as great as Budd ran, Ingrid beat this record by another 10 seconds the next year in 1986. Two great runners.

Actually, Kristiansen WAS at her best in this race. She ran under her own WR so this was her PB up to this point in her career and she still got destroyed by Budd. Ingrid did run faster the following year and you are right that she was even better at 10,000m but this race showed you how great Budd was.

his wasn’t supposed to be the way Mary Decker was remembered by the world. From a precociously early age, she was one of America’s best runners, a child track-and-field prodigy whose lithe frame and perfect form had top coaches and the folks at Nike salivating to sign her up and hitch a ride as she soared to future fame and glory. At age 12, a lanky preteen with a shy demeanor and Chrissy Snow pigtails, she already knew she wanted to be an Olympian. At 13, she ran her first under-five-minute mile. Off the track, she was “little Mary Decker,” 86 pounds of braces and wiry tendons. On the track, she was unstoppable.
