I mean, this is the best series ever played, right? For me at least, this blew Joseph vs Greentea out of the water, not just in terms of level of play, but how entertaining it was. Fractal looks like he's having the time of his life, and Dog seems super chilled even while getting back-to-back killscreen tetrises. Also, loved the sportsmanship, big respect for Dog for taking the loss graciously after playing a series that would beat just about any other player on just about any other day. Congrats Fractal!

@@NollyRS In terms of level of play, obviously that is true. In terms of entertainment though, I'd still rank that one near the top, just because of how exciting it was, the players' personalities, etc. Fractal actually reminds me of Greentea quite a lot - he always seems like he's super happy to be there, and can be quite emotive in tournament play. @@Arrica101 The elimination of the kill screen as a hard deadline is a really weird development for the game as a competition. Just a couple years ago, if one player got to 29 with a 1.3M, and another player transitioned with like 900k or smth, the 1.3 player would basically be guaranteed to win. But now because of how the scoring scales on post 29 levels and the possibility of infinite chase-downs, there's less reward for risky play. While it's true that only a handful of elite players like these 2 are consistent enough to make it happen, that number will only rise in coming years. You can argue as to whether this is good or bad for the game, but regardless it's just not the same game.

It's probably time for CTWC to implement some kind of rule like tiebreaks in tennis. Otherwise there's a risk games in this year's tournament can drag out for a very long time, and that will probably damage the growth of the game. I'd suggest something like first to rollover the score wins automatically. Taking nothing away from Fractal here because his consistency a digging ability might be best in the world right now, but watching players line it out on level 29 will get boring to viewers very quickly. Tetrises on killscreen are mega to witness and I think the organizers of tournaments need to reward players for taking the risk.
@rsoxboy2 жыл бұрын
Just to add, this suggestion is looking forward into the future. With the rate players are progressing with their rolling technique, I don't think it will be too long before we have dozens of players capable of lining out for an extended period on killscreen. Maybe CTWC this year should stay as is, but CTWC 2023 should seriously think about it if this year's tournament has some games drag out for a while.
@vandypants2 жыл бұрын
We are looking to possibly test a linecap-ish solution in Masters for September (basically a twice-as-fast killscreen on level 39 or 49.) But that would be just a one-month trial. Probably too early to permanently mess with Tetris, but in 2023 almost certainly.

About line cap: here is a simple suggestion that may lower or even negate the need to use such a tool: simply, at kill-screen, change the scoring method: double the points for a triple, and double (or even triple) the points for a Tetris. (Or maybe use some other multipliers)
@PanchoKnivesForever2 жыл бұрын
Your rule makes WAYYY MORE SENSE than a line cap - Reward the gameplay style you want instead of disallowing styles you don’t want. What about when players get 60+ line droughts or much longer droughts Post-29? Although somewhat uncommon, it’s still something to consider. If we add a line cap, that would prevent scalers (line-out players like Fractal) from reaping the benefits of their efforts in post-29 line drought situations, which would be unfair, right? Whereas implementing an increased points multipliers for post-29 Tetrises, for example, will lead more-aggressive players to continue their strive for better aggro play post-29 because of the much larger Tetris benefits, while players like Fractal will naturally tend towards more aggressive gameplay due to the much larger Tetris benefits being awarded, too, and BOOM! There you have it, culture that promotes aggressive gameplay.

I remember watching Joseph Salee back in the hypertap days. Hilarious how an innovation in tapping technique has made post kill screen viable for more players. Edit: just watched Fractal go to Level 60 and I can see why some people want a line limit. If more and more players are able to survive on kill screen, the game will devolve into a stamina game and the importance of taking risks will become non-existent.

What happened in round two showed us that when somebody tops out, there has to be a time limit for the other player to catch up in live tournaments too, just like in Tetris Effect. The game is called Tetris and going for Tetrises even in kill screen should be rewarded. Current format encourages players to line out and since most pros can easily play kill screen these days, not having a time limit kills the joy a little bit.

Good game though but Dog won in my eyes, time to change the rules before this turn into a snooze to watch.
@AlexCottle2 жыл бұрын
I gotta agree. Top talent, no doubt, but as a spectator sport, its way more exciting seeing risks taken at that level. I would imagine that, for top tier players, singling and doubling indefinitely after 29 is going to be- well not trivial- but much more common. Part of the appeal of CT (in previous times) is that eventually there is an end (29) so you have to take risks and play optimally. Rolling has done away with that. It allows for much slopier/unoptimized stacking with a greater chance for recovery. It is what it is, but I do find my interest waning with these types of finishes. I don't blame the player- if I were in Fractals shoes, I'd probably do the same. But Dog is way more exciting to play. I think they should hard cap at level 39.

They killed tetris but they really killed Tetris show, no one want to see line by line, rules have to change . Like a marathon, we ll should stop at 230 lines

I don't want to diminish Fractal's achievement, but the game is called Tetris...not singles and doubles.

Dog was more aggressive and more exciting (IMO), but when money is on the line, playing it safe isn't a bad strategy by Fractal. Can't blame him at all...

like singling and doubling post 29 for 10 minutes is easy right?
@BenderTheCat0072 жыл бұрын
It's dumb for Dog to play it like a game. He should single / double out like Fracal make every game last an incredibly boring hour. They'd change the rules for the very next tournament.

@@andTutin why ever go for tetris, then? just line out 18 and 19, too... the above isn't serious...but still, I would hate to see a game where say Eric gets the first 3 million and then nine minutes later Huff lines his way to victory (btw...I have no idea how hard 29 is...i can't make it past lvl13)

Ouch, fractal's win was perfectly legitimate. I'd be cool with a "first to roll over" wins rule though

why wasn't Fractal allowed to continue at 28:29 when he had the world record?
@MonthlyTetris Жыл бұрын
He decided to stop playing. In general, continuing to play when the game is won is considered bad manners at live events.

The announcer was so biased for Dog he missed making a great historic call for Fractal... this match the announcer sucked😒

Watching game 2 chase down is the most boring thing I can imagine. Never thought a breaking every WR video would be so boring. We watched Dog push & play an exciting post 29 game while Fractal just played on for basically forever with no risk for players at this level. Not sure if the solution is something like limiting max lines, limiting max time above 28, or only counting Tetris points after 28, but this is just boring. The only thing saving it now is Dog playing with risk. If he played like Fractal we'd have games lasting an hour of nothing, but singles & doubles. At that point may was well start at 29 forget 19.

I didn't think it was boring. Pretty cool that multiple play styles are viable at the highest level
@tommj43652 жыл бұрын
I agree that at some point a change of some kind should be put into place. I still however found these matches really really exciting and I hope to see more and more players get to this level and see how far they can go with no restrictions

I don't think a "game ends at X lines" would be a good approach, but something like "X lines without tetris" could be a solution to make games more exciting. Apart from the hype factor of the score going higher and higher, watching someone burn singles and doubles for minutes is the most boring thing in the world.

@@CMorpheus59 Tetris Effect: Connected have a chase down timer. Could have something like that because I did not enjoy Fractal taking match 2 playing like a coward. Seems like it's all played to win the price pool money at that point and not pushing their limits and also entertain the audience. Without it being exciting to watch there will be no interest from people and then Tetris slowly dies instead of growing. And if it doesn't grow there will be no future price pool money to win anyway. So no offence to Fractal but he needs to be stopped from his boring playstyle before he single handedly ruin the sport. He reminds me of campers in COD or CSGO, players that need to win at any cost playing as boring as possible camping in a house until others take a risk and make a move. That is what I see when I see Fractal single clearing like a fool just to win when he should lose that because he's minutes behind. That is why they have a timer in CSGO, to stimulate and reward the players making a move and actually playing the game before the timer runs out and punish safe playing cowards. The game is called Tetris for a reason and you should win because you did the most Tetrises pre and post kill screen and nothing else. I don't dislike Fractal as a person I just think he needs to be saved from himself here because that cheesy playstyle just pissed me off. In NES Tetris I think a 30 second or so chase down timer is plenty. If they can't chase down in that time it means they are not good enough in pre-killscreen game and should improve there. Dog is a beast in both pre and post killscreen and he and huff are definitely the most entertaining players to watch right now. When looking at comments I don't seem to be alone in my thoughts. Some might just be a bit more restricted in how they express it. I do feel I speak for a lot though, no one likes a camper. Great games overall and thank you for hosting this, great commentary as usual.

@@messiahshow fractal is well aware and has been advocating for months to introduce a line cap to prevent his very strategy, because he thinks efficiency battles are more interesting. Now that he’s demonstrated a line out strategy is viable, I agree. But I’ll never knock him for continuing to use the best strategy available as long as it’s tournament legal
