The last years was the most snowiest Years and the railroads are certainly feeling it. In order to keep the tracks and ROW clear, railroads across the state have been putting their plows and blowers to good use.

Snow plows rely on speed to push the same to the sides. Rotaries can get through thicker ice that plows can't, at the necessary expense of speed. Basically, sometimes conditions are too dangerous for plows. That's why rotaries were developed.

With snow and ice THAT bad all they can do is keep chugging along. The rotaries don't come out very often but when they do they are the biggest weapon the train industry has.

This was filmed in Romania in February 2012 in Buzau County. After weeks of snowstorms, in some regions was a 5-6 meters or more very dense and frozen snow layer. Very hard to remove. That’s insane. I live in northern Canada and we get lots of snow during the winter but rarely this much all at once. The snow is nearly higher than then train. Not to mention snow drifts and wet snow can be like concrete to move. This snow is just packed in there.

Seems like the plow could have a screw in the middle to start break up the snow pack then the blades could gather and remove it more easily and quicker. The train could then move at maybe 1mph.
