I went frame by frame with the "," and "." buttons to go back and forth frame by frame. There is no debate about the serve at 2.38, the ball disappears behind his shoulder while topspin is imparted, the next frame we see his paddle and the ball with the "sell" of backspin, but the ball has already left the paddle. Furthermore the camera is to the left (wider angle) than the receiver, it would have been worse - ie hidden for longer - for the receiver. ITTF rule 2.6.4 "From the start of service until it is struck, the ball shall be above the level of the playing surface and behind the server's end line, and it shall not be hidden from the receiver by the server or his or her doubles partner or by anything they wear or carry." This means the ball can't be hidden at any time, not just the point of contact, although the point of contact is always very close to his body. For the other serves including 04:44 we can see the ball in every frame, though on some points it's very close to his body, I suspect the receiver would not have seen it from their angle.

Can someone explain to me - assuming the serves are legal meaning the contact with the ball is visible to the receiver, why is it so challenging for them to return his serves?
@sheffsteel7
@sheffsteel7 10 ай бұрын
because the normal way of playing table tennis (your instincts built up over years) is to look at how the arm and hand move which gives a great clue regards the type of spin you'll receive. However in this case you see his hand moving in one direction and assume that's the spin you receive, however his wrist is moving in a different direction and this is massively difficult to see especially as he's moving the wrist so quickly in slightly different directions, so many of his serves look the same but have different spins. I believe pro's have learnt to ignore the arm and wrist movement, they bend right down to the table height and watch the bounce of the ball. A chop serve pops up a little higher than normal and a top spin serve stays low but your brain has to compute this in a split second. Then there's float serves where there's big arm movement so you expect spin but there's actually minimal spin on the ball. Where the bat contacts the ball has a big effect on spin strength, if you try to spin the ball when you make contact near the handle doesnt matter how hard you try there won't be much spin, where as when the ball contacts the edge of a bat the bat naturally moves faster, so there will be more spin. Altho power and skill play a big part in table tennis, deception also helps you win points. Players often have a trick (deception) serve that they only use when it's tight near the end of a match.

Are you agree that from Beginners to Pros, these days serves are too conservative. I'm making my part with some wild serves even being sometimes too risky 😅. I missed some because of that 😊. Opponents are happy getting a free point too
@leonawroth2516
@leonawroth2516 10 ай бұрын
On a better level, it's more important to slightly trick the opponent, instead of getting outright a point. So you don't want to go full risk every time, instead do small variations that look the same. If you opponent misjudges, you can easily attack the third. That's especially true, if you happen to get some errors, because of your risk. In an important match, you shouldn't have more than 2 errors over the full match.

the most ilegal service in the world! i know Par Gerell because of his irregular service! for those who don't understand, he throws the ball behind his body, plus he's left-handed! and when the game is difficult, he steals even more. It really is a great serve, but irregular.

These serves are legal. You have to look at them from the receiver’s point of view (which the camera angle does really well in this video), and the ball (90% of the time - made up percentage) is NEVER covered, at least in this video. Not sure what everyone else is seeing here. It’s CLOSE to the body, but it’s not covered. That’s a sign of a good serve within the rules. I can still contact.
@Baacaadii

Some are visible, soweit are not. Even from the camera angle. The POV from the reciever is far more left. Also he did not throw the ball upwards and not from the open hand.
@marvingeheim8513
@marvingeheim8513 10 ай бұрын
your percentage admits not all of them were legal. the one that kicked Dan out was illegal for example. you only see the racket when its open up but from the other angle you see it was more closed when it actually hit the ball.

90% doesn’t equal “most illegal serves.” The comments infer that all or most of these serves are illegal, and they’re not. That’s on par with most players, and I gave a generous 10% because most players in the world make a few mistakes.

02:38 (Find the serve contact point using the ".") - The ball is almost covered even for the camera, which is angled to the right. Do you really think the receiver can see the ball in that position? others like that 01:17, 02:38, 02:42*, 02:53, 03:08*, 03:23*, 04:10*, 04:44*** ( * means the ball is insanely hidden)

Serving and returning serves always looks so incredibly easy but if you ever played against a high class player you know that its a big challenge. I am not even close to that level but many people in lower classes hardly ever get any of my serves back or at least not well enough to prevent me from attacking the return so that I even had opponents giving up after not beeing able to recieve aynthing for two sets. When I played against a high level player once (still below TTD I think) I also hardly managed to return anything at all as even the "easy" downspin serve had so much more spin then anything I ever gotten served before.

Of course. For these kind of challenge, the easier way is to put the ball OVER the net, which would be extremely easy to do for the better player. However, you can tell the better players don’t just want to put it over the net. They want to be able to read the spin correctly and to have a nice low to the net return, thus so many net balls.

GOLDEN THUMB RULE OF RECEIVE- relax your body, arm and wrist. check the trajectory of the incoming ball. initial flight of the ball= slower to faster with a kick is topspin. faster to slower is generally backspin. safest way to receive/ most surest way is chopping/ slicing everything. yes! you can slice both backspin and topspin by adjusting the bat angle and wrist action. other aggressive receives like looping/ topspin, flicks, fade, punch, drives,etc have relatively high chances of errors.
