Mega Transports: Biggest Containership | Engineering Documentary
It is the largest heavy load transport on earth! The maiden voyage of the biggest containership of all times.
It is the largest heavy load transport on earth! When the first ship of the brand-new OOCL-fleet gets underway, more cargo is moved at one time than anywhere else in the world and ever before. At 21,100 TEU capacity, the vessels are the largest ever ordered to date.
400 meters long and about as wide as a football field (58.8 meters). These ships will not only be able to load more cargo than ever before, they will also be equipped with a number of high-class energy-saving systems.
This Episode shows the maiden voyage of the OOCL HONG KONG. Everything happens for the first time: the captain, the pilots and the harbour crew have never before manoeuvred a giant ship like this. Berthing, loading, steering: Risky manoeuvres, which have never been tested before.
Once berthed, the cargo loading pushes everyone involved to the limit. Crew, Crane operators and the lashing team. A loading procedure like this, with additional containers on top of the so far known stacking limit, has only been theoretically discussed, but never tested in real life. Balancing the ship, moving and securing the stunning mass of containers is a task, which does not condone even the slightest mistake.
The route from Shanghai to Rotterdam, with stop in Singapore brings constant challenges: pirate areas, onboard emergency drills and the navigation through the narrow waters of the Suez Canal. All of this happens under incredibly high pressure of time - will the world’s largest container ship stay on schedule on its maiden voyage?

This 2017 documentary is very interesting well presented and a great introduction to the mega transporters of the future. As the program is dated, I wonder given the Covid-19 pandemic and shipping disruption, have all the sisters ships launched, and how has business been for these large vessels so dependent on maximum loading? Further to this, HK based OOCL was acquired by Chinese megacorp COSCO in 2018 but details of whether operations are merged or run as a subsidiary are murky - how is OOCL operating in 2022?

Yea, I really like these kind of documentaries. But the narrator's are really getting on my nerves. Trying to make it exiting when someone is drinking a coffee or likewise.🙄 I remember when discovery where just a great channel without these ridiciolos commentary.

9000 KG fuel per hour 216.000 KG fuel per day 3.456.000 KG fuel for a 16 days trip from China to Rotterdam that is slightly less then 165 kg per container for the entire distance, very low..

@@drillerkiller9 Actually yes, I do. It is considerable les then a truck would use over the same distance. Fuel consumption worldwide is a staggering number.

@@drillerkiller9 For the number of cargo and the distance covered, that is the most economically and environmentally friendly option.
@despota2

Just for a numerical comparison. The distance between between Shenzen and Rotterdam is 9200KM in a straight line, so bringing one cargo container by truck would be at least 12000Km. One truck consumes around 40l of diesel in 100Km so the route would need ~4000Kg of diesel per container. Plus they are using the shittiest crudest oil that cannot be used for much else while to get diesel you need to burn additional oil for the refining process. For fuel efficiency this is at least 25x better than trucks. Not even counting the amount of tires that needed for 21k container. That would be 45000 truck tires completely used, for 18 wheelers and 100000 km tire durability. Also 21000 18 wheeler would make a line 420Km line of trucks instead of one big ass ship and also imagine the road upkeep.
