Love the enthusiasm of all these people towards their winter firework festival. Here in Canada, they want to cancel all fireworks because of new immigrants and animals. It's time to take back our country and make it Canada again.

Building the shell from the inside out? Hard pass here. ;) But amazing to see. Beautiful cinematography as always. Only wish I could have seen this in a theater with other enthusiasts: the original SF/NorCal movie screening was so much fun! Question: was the shell diameter chosen to avoid overpressuring at launch, or for ease/safety of loading? It seemed like quite a bit of space between the shell and mortar which would affect launch height. Thanks for posting! And Happy New Year to you all!

Yes, the shell was built smaller than to tube to provide more "blow by" and reduce peak pressure and therefore shock to the casing and contents of the shell.

Here’s the secret to the huge sakadama the Japanese fire off every year. And the use 500 lbs black powder to get that big bow up. But the secret? Is that they put more wraps on the she’ll and the main thing is they put a cushion in between the shell and the lift charge. The shock absorber is the main thing but they will not tell anyone that because they want to win every competition every time. Try a cushion next time and you get that baby up. Good luck. A tip from a trip that watched the process of theirs.

so how much did it cost to build the one that CATOed and the one that was successful? And how come no Guinness record for the worlds largest flower pot?
@passfire

They never made the cost public, but between the equipment, time and materials it was significant!

At 22:12, there seems to be an excess space between the mortar wall and the shell, whats that all about?..i would think that would most certainly cause a LOT of pressure blow bye, and extremely hinder the overall apogee of the shell..?... higher the better but of course that means a lot of pressure on the shell inheritly....OR hell dropped the titan sub down the hole, might of even got away WITHOUT an IMPLOSION if you were good enough...maybe.....anyone😮?

Blow by is on purpose. Gives a gentler lift to the shell.

For a world record, it should have been an least a long lasting palm tree, it was short lived as far as display. Japan, has been shooting 4' shells that has a much longer lasting display. Sorry. I too have a pyrotechnics license and have been around fireworks since the age of 9. I'm 56 now. You could have done better, for a display. Just saying. Sure it lit up the sky, but not for very long, like a palm tree would have been, with a secondary explosion.!

I fully agree with you it's a joke that these guys woke up one day and thought they could build and successfully shoot a firework that probably only took a month to make when in Japan it takes a year to make one that big. The break on that shell was just embarrassing not symmetrical at all not. In my opinion the break should be considered in the world record attempt.

Quantity 1 tonne vs Japanese quality half tonne, you even can't compare beautiful JP firework. What is matter more quality or quantity?
