fun fact, when sonar was first being studied and invented, scientists kept seeing weird things on the radar. at first they thought it was the ocean floor but then saw that it kept moving up and down depending on time of day and such. it was swarms of billions of lanternfish. we have a species of fish so prevalent in the world that it messed with sonar readings and essentially came up as a solid wall on radar due to how many there were

@@_mortiam 'medium' sized animals tend to be around the size of your hand to the size of a basketball. and most animals without skeletons are the ones that get bigger, probably because they're not getting their bones flattened. but most of the scary looking things (besides giant squids and the like) are actually fairly small. the photos are just zoomed in for more detail but that makes people think it's all giant and scary edit: i just realized that yes scary is relative. the hundred foot long jellyfish and siphonophores can be terrifying to some people, but alas i mostly mean scary as in tons of teeth sharp things some of the 'scariest' fish you see in those compilations, the viperfish, dragonfish, MOST species of anglerfish, and even the thick tube that is the barreleye fish only get up to about 6 inches long. not that size matters of course

In the horror movie "Shark Night" they feature cookie cutter sharks as one of the captured species. It's funny you described an ice cream scoop, because that is exactly how the cookie cutter shark's jaws work. Instead of a top and bottom jaw, this sharks lower jaw is attached just like an ice cream scoop, with a 180 degree rotation then they just scoop out a hemisphere of fish meat. ;p Nice podcast. 21:35 With a predator being an animal that preys on another living animal, the biggest predator would be the biggest living animal on Earth, the Blue whale with them eating Krill (Blue whale - predator, Krill - prey), granted they aren't a animal that the biggest half of animals need to fear being hunted by, but by definition they are predators.
@repulsedfrog9 күн бұрын
blue whales dont hunt nor prey so by that definition it is sperm whale. some people like to use predator almost in exchange with carnivore (which i think is a bit pointless lol) in that killing and eating other animals makes one a predator and in that case it would be a blue whale. i think the distinction of hunting and preying is important, being a filter feeder isn't very predatory.
@zebedeemadness26729 күн бұрын
@@repulsedfrog Blue whale hunt and prey on krill, they don't swim about blindly with there mouths open and wait for krill to go in it. They find a mass of krill then rush the krill with there mouth open. They don't filter feed like Whale shark and Basking sharks. It's only the size of the squid (Giant and Callosal) that pushes the Sperm whale as the biggest predator, if Sperm whales only hunted 1ft squid species would you still have the same out look on them, both Krill and Squid are both invertebrates, just that the Squid are bigger, but krill can be bigger in mass.
@repulsedfrog9 күн бұрын
@@zebedeemadness2672 you've really confused me, who is 'they' in your context? why do you bring up sperm whale food sizes? i was speaking on the 'hunting prey' behaviour being what makes a predator. i don't agree that the size of the prey is what makes the largest predator, that doesn't make any sense at all. i'm not trying to be contrarian or rude, i have a disability so i could just genuinely be misunderstanding your wording, but i can't figure out the meaning or purpose of your first point and i don't see how the second point is relevant to my comment or 'out look'.
@zebedeemadness26729 күн бұрын
@@repulsedfrog I've replaced the word they, although it was pretty obvious, bass on the past post and hunting krill. I assumed that the only reason why you didn't class the Blue whale as a predator was the size of there prey, because the Blue whale does hunt prey (krill) so is the biggest predator, they (Blue whale) isn't out there filtering vegetables.
