The bounching voltage might be just hf. Check it with an oscilloscope to see whats actually going on. Your voltmeter might get confused.
@simontillson4826 ай бұрын
Yep. I was thinking similar. If the frequency gets in sync with the meter’s sampling rate, it will read different - either higher or lower. There’s bound to be a large ripple, so the meter is desperately trying to give a reading, but can only measure what it sees when it is sampling, which is a tiny period of time a few times a second. You could filter the probe leads by putting a resistor in series with one lead and a capacitor across the meter end (say 10k and 1uF) to get a purer DC reading. I bet these anomalies would just go away…

you could use more efficient leds from luminus, their 3030 range has some really high efficiency, all be it on lower CRI. also i think you could probably get an IC with a higher conversion efficiency that accepts up to 40V (check allegro) if you get them that are efficient with not too many in series you can draw the caps down quite a bit. if you can find a sepic one it can do buck and boost, then you can draw them down to probably 3V or less, using most of your capacity. super caps that are big are recommended for their huge storage capacity that can be 3000uF! they run up to 3V and can be put in series with the usual consequence (you lose 50% capacity with 2 in series)

Now *that* is an awesome project, way to go man! Elegantly simple, low cost, and obviously, immediately, practically useful. A cut above the usual YT fare. You probably already thought of it, but it'd be really slick if the caps, lights, and circuitry were a detachable subassembly so you don't have to carry the whole crank box around if you don't want to. One thing though: be careful of your back when you're pulling on that thing, bending over at the waist like that and doing repeated jerking movements puts absolutely massive momentary torque through your lumbar. I've been scolded by a couple bosses for doing things just like that because they don't want problems with L&I and OSHA. Maybe an opportunity to refine the ergonomics of a future version, or even shrink it just a little to something you can pull apart with two hands, no back stresses involved. Best home invention I've seen in a long time, you should get some kind of award. Keep it up!

Great work! Excellent in fact! I was an early adopter of using 10-15 watt cob led bulbs to replace ceiling bulbs at home, and have several bulbs with dead electronics but working leds; these would be great to use in place of forming and soldering your own and I don't recall having such dark bands, which were quite noticeable in this design. This could be eliminated/greatly reduced by having say 8 or more flat sides, with more rows of leds on each flat, and only the bottom part of the bulb shape curve in and have say a couplr of rows of two, then one led at the bottom, and utilise the same idea at the top, or just have a flat disc on top with plenty of leds firing straight up, which bounces light off the ceiling, like the commercial ones did. Again great work, excellent application of overcoming the age old problem of using cap. banks. Well done! I keep imagining a Bedini coil running off of a solar/battery pack recharging the caps for a more fixed longer run application. Surprised how long this runs off such a small amount of kenitic energy. Very impressive build.

Exceptional. Are you familiar with the paper by Yale economist William Nordhaus from the mid 90s on the cost of producing light "Do Real-Output and Real-Wage Measures Capture Reality? The History of Lighting Suggests Not". I believe you would enjoy it. It essentially chronicles the near million-fold reduction in the cost of producing light that humans have achieved since antiquity. With the advent of highly efficient electroluminescence and circuits to power it, our species has essentially mastered the production of light, approaching within perhaps a factor of two of the theoretical maximum efficiency for full spectrum visible light production.

I had the idea of a pullstart powered compressor for a pellet rifle awhile back. I like your idea more. Ever since playing Myst several decades ago I have been obsessed with dynamos. I have several flashlights powered by various types of generators and I think your approach is the best. I have thought of using voltage regulators to pull more power from the battery/capacitors, but your approach of using high voltage is amazing. Because when you turn a generator very fast you get more voltage, but not more amperage, so normally that extra voltage would go to waste. This setup lets you store all the energy, and regulate it down to a useable amount. I love every part of this. Good job!

Ribbon LED's would certainly spread a more even light than individual LED's. With ribbon LED's you would also have the benefit of an IR remote control and essential IP rating for outside use. If you wanted to take it one step further, add a 3D printed cage around the LED head and include a bug zapper! ⚡ This is just my opinion, I could be wrong. 😉

And when the power would drop down below a certain threshold they could recharge it back up again by hand and never have to use any kind of batteries again. It was perfect for the expedition. On the light I suggest you put a diffuser on it to spread the light out more. I think you could use a milk jug to do it if you happen to have one. While that will dim the light a bit, it will shoot out the light a bit more evenly around the space you are in, and make it a bit safter to look in its general direction. Also SELL this. Lots of people would buy it. To make it a bit better, and dummy proof it I suggest you add a green LED to indicate that it has reached max charge, a red LED to indicate that it is getting low, and will need a couple more pulls.(I know this may add a fair bit more complexity and add to power draw but I don't think it will be to much to add.)

Really interesting project, great potential for a work site light. But word of caution if your running the LED's direct off of AC I have been totally messed up ill (motion sickness style nearly vomiting in the end) from working by an LED torch late through the night once, although I haven't thoroughly tested it I put that down to a very noisy AC circuit even if it was just off qn 18v battery and even if you can't directly see a flicker I now believe it can affect people. I'm not someone who particularly notices any of the grid AC LED bulbs now but whatever frequency the torch was running at messed me up. So my suggestion is even if you have to sacrifice efficiency some strong filtering should be looked at trying to run as close to DC as possible. Or get a good sample of people to see if uou can nail down any "bad" frequencies.
