That creature you asked about is a Ragged Sea Hare. It is a shell less mollusk not a nudibranch, also not a regular sea hare. Bursatella leachii is the latin name.

As dedicated Pompano fishermen/women the wife and I were thrilled to see this video. Lesson learned: Just because you have active bait in the water and pompano swimming by doesn't mean you're going to get a bite. Your rig is very clever...well done.

The sand volcano is typical of a mantis shrimp burrowing a hole. I watched this growing up in Hawaii. Their many legs can produce the volume of sand that is thrown up as they dig a home or clean out their burrow. Then again I've also seen this type of activity from underground springs but it's usually a constant stream then a short burst. Nice vid.

This underwater footage really does answer the life long question, how in the world do fish take your bait all the time without being hooked. Literally the bait was in the pompano and permits mouth and then they spit out the bait and the hook. I am sure a lot of the time the hook is spit out without the bait on it. Just amazing footage that answers questions from us anglers. Please continue to post more of these underwater videos.

I'm blaming the curve in the hook. It's too curved IMO. I've had contests fishing for things that lived in the kelp beds and the simple Eagle Claw hooks outperformed the curved hooks ten to one. If I felt the bite nine out of ten times it was followed by a hookup. If it made it into a fish mouth it wasn't coming out until I took it out. On the California coast before the kelp collapse ruined everything. I hate sea urchins.

Not the same as being on the sand, but you can still fish the surf from a pier. I'm not sure about all piers, but most are handicapped accessible. I know at our pier (Surf City Pier in Surf City, NC) we go out of our way to help get you out on the planks and wetting a line!

RE floats, you could use some pop up beads (common in UK surf fishing) on the hooklength itself to get them closer to the hook. Might give you an interesting action too and would definitely lead to less potentially spooky hardware all tightly together across the rig. Amazing video! Tight lines

An old timer that I fished with frequently after my dad passed away, told me that when Fish go to test a bait.. they will take a quick nibble at it first…and if they don’t like the feel.. they move on. He was a firm believer in homemade floats from flip-flops that were soft, versus some of the Styrofoam models that are out there now. I wasn’t going to question his knowledge, and we had pretty good luck with soft floats. I also experimented with soft float-hooks.

Go fish cam and salty pompano should absolutely be sponsoring you sir, this is awesome! I have never fished in such beautiful waters, except 1 time on a "deep sea fishing charter boat" years ago, catching red snapper. I've always fished the white river for catfish and white perch. Very few sturgeon below an old (1911 or so built hydropower dam) called Williams dam in Williams Indiana. It's so rich with insanely huge catfish and lord only knows what else... this is everything I've ever wanted, to see what actually happens once your lines in the water. 💯.

Thanks for sharing, loved the content. I strive to do underwater observation with my GoFish Cam as well, first and foremost to try and observe and learn and hopefully become better fishermen, and also because live hook-ups with the cam running are just awesome! There were many interesting aspects to this footage and I, personally, was rather surprised at the ability they had to avoid getting hooked, after having the hook fully in their mouths. Awesome footage, thanks again for taking the time and effort to do this. I've lost what could have been some awesome underwater footage because it happened after the 90-100 minute mark and the camera battery was done. Win some, lose some!

Have you tried tying any of those rigs with lil' corkies? We use them drift fishing for steelhead, and you have a pretty good assortment of sizes and colors. I am going to try tying some of those rigs with a stinger hook as well since the sand shrimp/ghost shrimp we have in Oregon are so soft. I think a snelled hook with a stinger on the tag end should work pretty well. If a smaller float like a corkie isn't enough to raise your bait, then a smaller hook with a stinger could also counter that.

Very nice video! That creature might be a sea slug. I think the pomps go after the floats bc they think its a sand flea. They might be biting it to determine if its real and if they really want to take it as though they were kind of sampling it by tasting it. I think if you create fish gum bait that floats in the shape of a sand flea it might do well.

I was using 3 inch brigh orange cigar bobbers to keep my sabiki rig suspended under water on the pier and noticed that something was actually sinking its teeth on the bobber so I added some treble hooks on the bobber to see what would happen and a shark about 4 feet long got hooked but I didn't have the right set up so it bit the line off. Next time I'm going to tie the treble hooks that are attached to the bobber with black coated 80lb steel wire line. The big fish seem to be attracted by the color and shape, I looked at the bobber and I started to think like a fish and the bobber actually looks like if I was staring at a fish from its behind so I'm guessing that the shark thinks its sneaking up on the fish from behind no matter what side because the shark only sees the rear and never the bobber/lure's eyes. This happened about 4 times before i actually hooked the shark that cut my line.

Awesome footage. I am wondering if you might try a bar rig (Pac Northwest) fished on sandy bottoms would keep that bait up without a float. Secondly, rod in hand and you could have struck 2 of those bites and set the hook? Had the shrimp been trimmed smaller maybe they would have been slurped easier? Also - a barbless hook with a flattened bend below the shank gets a lot of fish but you have to keep tension at all times. Super good job man - so interesting.
