One day... I dream of being able to have an Irish Wolfhound. Most beautiful dog in the world. I'll be sure to get one as soon as I manage to wiggle out of this city and own enough land for him and the bee hives I'd like to harvest some day! That's my heaven. :-)

I had the honor of owning an Irish Wolfhound. He was gentle, gigantic, friendly, smart, loyal, and so athletic. He also would stretch out on our 7' couch...and then there was no room for us. He has long since "Crossed the Bridge," but he will never be forgotten. Sadly, Irish Wolfhounds have short lifespans.

I have one irish wolfhound and he is an extreme couch potato! despite his hunting genes all he wants to do is cuddle. And yes, he still is a puppy. he was super easy to train and i recommend this breed to anyone as long as you are able to walk them daily. they are super sweet,gentle, and great for young kids. they are a great first time dog to since they are very adaptable.

I lived with a woulfhound for six years- lost her fifteen years ago, still miss her...Never met a aggressive hound- actually the one I lived with went to walk with the wife of the owner (she's around 100 pounds) and the dog looked after HER, never made a sudden movement on the leash, never sprang forward-because she seemed to understand that this fragile lady on the other end of the leash could not take it.

we found a baby dog back in may. he had his eyes closed and was on the side of the street. my girlfriend took care of that baby for 1 month, nights she wouldn’t sleep. he was a little black doggy with a nice white spot on his back. we bottle fed him and would always put him in a box with a heat pad. he started taking small steps, he would tumble sometimes. he learned how to eat kibble. i taught him a few tricks. we ended up naming him Spot. i suspected he was some sort of labrador. eventually i realized his coat felt and looked unique. i did extensive research and found out he was an irish wolfhound ! it’s amazing how everything people say about wolfhounds is true. Spot is such a friendly gentle playful dog. irish wolfhounds are awesome !

***** I never understood how breeders could be so bad. Maybe it's because I'm from the south but I got my dog from a golden retriever breeder who's a retired vet, and my cousin is a wolf hybrid breeder, she just knows what she's doing and all around where I come from breeders really treat their pets like their own babies. But what I hate about the south is we have two kinds of people, the ones who see other animals as nothing more than property and get a kick out of shooting a deer in the ass and watching it try to stumble away, and the ones who treat their chickens like family. Now I have nothing against hunters, I hunt, but fuck the guys who get a kick out of torture, just kill what you need to kill and go home you know?
@serenesista8 жыл бұрын
PootisPigeon Maybe you're right. I still want to adopt from a shelter though, because those guys will be euthanized if they're not adopted. If the dogs from breeders are treated well then they are lucky. I love rescue stories. They always make me cry. I want to rescue a dog someday.
@reillyazul8298 жыл бұрын
serenesista I agree about rescue, but most times you won't find an IW in a shelter / pound for very long. There are lots of nice people (like you:) who adopt these gentle giants right away. A lot of other breeds don't have the luxury of being as wanted. If that makes sense?

Fionn McCool was a boy. His uncle was in the fina, a hunting group in Celtic irealand. One day he was invited to the king with hia uncle. On hia way he met boys playing hurling (look it up if u want) he joined them. He was late. When he arrived an Irish wolfhound was guarding and won't let him past, fionn tricked the dig into opening it's mouth, and drove the sliter (hard small ball) through the wolfhounds mouth. Hope this was helpful! Fionn has many story's!

we had a WH when I was 7.........he was SOOOOOOO good-we used to go outside, on snow days from school, with dolls or whatever-throw him OUT of his doghouse so we could have a clubhouse-he didn't care-he would just keep sticking his head in, pushing the rubber flap aside to see what we were doing in "his" house..........I would be AT school and the principal would (at least every couple weeks) come find me, take me OUT of class and say "your Mom's not home and your Dog is on the playground at recess-please take your dog home" we used to ride him as a pony..............I wanted to put him in our dog show (I dunno WHY I decided this was a good idea-tiny girl, BIG dog (my Dad is 5"10 and he used to look WAY down on Dad) but, anyhow, being a good supportive Dad-he decided he was going to allow me to learn to WALK the dog on a leash-that would be the first step in me knowing how to train the dog.........one day, we were walking in a field next to our home.......Dad (thank heavens) was about 25 feet in front of us.....all of a sudden-the dog saw some quail............OH MAN..........I just remember my feet leaving the ground and yelling DAADDDYYYYY-and him grabbing me JUST as we went by.........the dog used to catch birds in his mouth-and then open his mouth and let them go-just for the sport I suppose........can you imagine the birds-telling other birds "dude, I thought I was a goner-stay AWAY from THAT tree" GOOOOD DOGS................sadly-our angel only lived 3 years.......we came home from school one day-Mom was at work, Dad didn't get home for an hour yet-we always put our bags in the house and went out to our babysitter (like-who is really going to mess with 2 girls in a pen with a 250 pound, 7 foot tall dog) and we knew he was sick........Dad took him to the vet-vet said nothing was wrong........next day, surprise-Dad was home early........we wanted to run right out and check on our friend/dog/horse/babysitter.....and Dad wouldn't let us go out-made us sit down and crying told us the doggie was too sick to stay with us but had been sad to leave us-and went to see Jesus and would be in Heaven playing and some day we would see him again.................I was 10, I am now 41-STILL one of THE saddest days of my life...........................

I’ve had Irish Wolfhounds for years. The quality of the breeder is key. Cancer free bloodline history and heart health, as well as temperament are the 3 must haves for pups from any breeder. Any breeder breeding hounds with lineage history of heart issues and cancer, should be avoided. The best vet schools in the US have many studies showing that if the hound is not neutered or spayed until around 3 years of age, the risk of breed specific cancers goes dramatically down. Think about that. The hound gets the benefit of all the hormonal changes that come through childhood and adolescence to develop properly and to optimal health. Neutering and spaying in the US at essentially infancy is done because humans are too lazy to prevent pregnancy until the pup is full grown. It can be done easily. Irish Wolfhounds especially need this time to come into full adulthood because neutering/spay as they can have a final growth spurt around the age of 3. We have always waited until 4 years of age before neutral/spaying and none of our hounds have died of cancer and most have lived until around 11-12 years. An excellent breeder, attention to nutrition, growth management and holding off on fixing are all key to a healthy , long lived IW. Don’t get one unless you’re willing to put in the effort. They are a breed that deserves the best.

Love that breed. But it´s sad that they have average life-span of 6-7 years. I´m not sure how fast they were in the past (surely they weren´t as big before), but they are not that fast. I watched multiple races with irish wolfhounds...they are actually very slow, compared to any other sighthound.
She is obviously American. Grand for her. I come from Dublin and I know she is talking like a bad tourist.the Irish wolfhound is more than that

Read up on the history of these enormous dogs they we're brought to the states in early times to hunt wolves out west that were killing calves. It is said you should NEVER train one of these for an attack dog or guard dog. They are truly gentle giants ,Iv'e had 2. BUT you get something this size excited riled up and protective and things could get ugly REAL quick. The sire of my second pup. could hang his chin over an 8' chain link fence looking down on you. He weighed 212 pounds. Plus around 48'' at the shoulder. Amazing dogs.
@willwatson73638 жыл бұрын
There are some farmers in KS that use a pack of greyhounds (3) and wolfhounds (2) to hunt coyotes. They (as all wolfhounds) hunt as a pack. The greyhounds run down the coyote pack and the wolfhounds follow up with the kill. Thats how they hunted wolves, as a pack. Not one on one.
