In this video I obtain the green paint in world’s hardest game 4 as fast as possible, using a number of glitches to save a lot of time. Without glitches this objective is somewhat interesting since you can ignore all the coins, but ultimately it would still be extremely similar to a regular 100% speedrun, since getting the green paint normally requires you to play through the majority of the level.
raw footage: • World’s Hardest Game 4...
This video is filled with inside jokes about a member from the whg community, down to the speedrun category name. The idea is that in a 100% playthrough he would always switch back to green when obtaining a different paint, and he more or less made the green cube his trademark. Go check him out: / @jacobmoesner4185
The first room is identical (minus the coins) to my glitched speedrun, which I’ve made a commentated explanation video for: • The World's Hardest Ga...
This video also explains a lot about savewarping, the main glitch in this run, so I’ll leave the basics out of this description.
The savewarp to skip both doors in B2 was one of the first applications I initially found, but it’s pretty useless since the coin door in level 1 can’t be skipped. Even for this category, you might be able to get the key very quickly, but you still have to backtrack to get the paint, and the door will remain closed if you skip past it. You’d have to savewarp backwards, but you would have to bypass the top checkpoint somehow. Luckily this is possible in the same way level 2 and 4 can be skipped, with deathpausing and cutscene storage. In this run it looks more confusing than usual, because it’s combined with a cutscene walk to speed it up a little. There are very few cutscenes in level 1, but one of them happens to be activated by the very key that we already need to collect in A1.
Speaking of this key, I do a little skip to collect it very quickly. Normally the one way conveyors on the right prevent you from doing this, but the hitbox of the player’s center is just large enough that it can be over a floor without being affected by the properties of that floor. As such you can avoid both falling into the pit and getting caught by the conveyor, although it’s fairly precise. This skip is kinda useless for regular 100%, since you need to collect the other key as well, and at that point it would be faster to just take the normal route. There’s the possibility of it being faster for a glitched 100%, but there’s currently no real interest in such a category. Anyway, the skip does work out pretty well for this specific run, and it’s actually kind of important. So important that I can’t choose not to do it if I want to be more consistent. The reason why it matters so much is because it bypasses the checkpoint on the left, which you’re normally required to touch if you want to get the key. It just so happens that the index of this checkpoint lines up with the index of the top checkpoint in B2, making the savewarp useless. As such this skip is actually vital to making this whole route work in the first place.
I apologize for the order of things being messier than usual, but I still need to talk about the skip in C1. This was actually found very recently, after being theorized by raflikk and inspired by vowels, go check out their stuff or something. It works because the hitpixels that are used to detect if the player should be falling into a pit are slightly outside of the sprite, which means that they actually go outside of the screen if you’re positioned at the very edge. While there, they won’t detect a pit, and you can cross over as if there was a sliver of ground there. You do need a specific vertical alignment to actually cross the gap, which I can get by touching the bottom wall in B1. However, the conveyors in that room will push me up or down by two pixels per frame, offsetting my align in the process. This means that I need to touch the conveyor in C1 for an odd number of frames to get aligned properly again.
This trick is kinda stupid and it’s very ambiguous whether it should be classed as a glitch, but I do think it’s pretty amazing that a major timesave that just so happens to apply to one of the sections in this very short run was found shortly before the perfect date to upload this video.
All in all I feel like this is a pretty interesting run, and I’m glad with how the video turned out. Rest assured, I am still working on more serious videos, I’m just busy having a skill issue, as well as trying to keep my life from falling apart.
