Don't worry, the laser is so big, it has a really large gravity so it slows down time, hence it moving 1m/s, in our time. Light travels about 300 million m/s and it takes light 4 years to reach Alpha Centauri, the closest star to the sun. Needless to say, it'll be a while before it reaches any sign of an alien race.

Taking forever to get all those AAAA NiCad batteries charged up. Takes 500 of them, but my battery charger only holds 2 at a time, and by my calculations, I'll only get one or two shots.
