Hats off to the historic gem cutters ...who did not have the technology we have today... and still produced incredible stones... that monarchies did whatever they could to possess them.

james it’s just a rock... a material possession doesn’t give you anything. At death you certainly don’t take it. If I had that rock I Would toss it in the ocean. It’s worthless in my eyes. People just put price tags in things for their benefit not caring much about ruining the earth in the process.

When I was a twelve year old collector of gems in 1957, my dad left me off in front of Harry Winston's on 5th Avenue. I walked in and asked if I could see the Hope diamond. That was before Winston donated it to the Smithsonian museums. They sat me down at one of the tables where customers sit and eventually a man came with a flat leather case. They opened it and there was the Hope in its necklace. I held it up and felt it for a while. Then they gave me a short tour of the cutting rooms and gave me a small cut diamond that has lost a section during cutting.

What an amazing jewel! Those gentlemen outdid themselves working this stone. It does make you wonder, before computer generated models and measurements and laser guided cutting, how did traditionally skilled gem cutters create some of the masterpieces that they did? Clearly this art of transformation is a love or passion that guides the gem cutters' vision, whatever they are given to work with.

I'm really glad that almost none of it was wasted and they really got as many smaller diamonds out of the parts they cut away for the big diamond. 66 smaller diamonds! Remarkable.

A lot of extraordinary interesting physics and chemistry going unremarked on here. The laser is clearly a high power, frequency doubled Nd:YAG system - that neon green color is just unmistakable. But it seems they are using a thin laminar jet of water as a waveguide for the beam, just like a fiber optic! That's very clever! Also the diamond looks totally black on the cut surfaces, why? It's become graphitized - the diamond allotrope of carbon is only metastable, graphite is much more stable and is what the molecular structure naturally reverts to in high heat. Finally, lasers are by definition just a single color, green here, so why does the beam appear bright cherry RED in some shots like at 1:05? You're seeing the Stokes shifted Raman scattering effect in water! The beam is behind a safety plastic window that blocks the main 532nm green beam and so you can see the red scattered light coming directly from the symmetric and asymmetric stretching modes of the O-H bonds in the molecules themselves! Wow, I've never seen that directly before!

I remember watching a similar video of his from a long time ago, it was beautiful but I cannot find it. Where he was talking over it saying how it's unprecedented to find such a gem.

Hmm, looks exactly what I have always known as a Royal Asscher cut; is a square step or emerald cut the same? Regardless, what a gorgeous gem.

zawsze mnie ciekawiło jak się szlifierz decyduje aby pociąć duzy kawałek kamienia na mniejsze. Czym się kieruje, jak tnie. Laser to chyba ogromne ułatwienie w dzisiejszym czasie.
