I took that train some years ago, and I can say with confidence that it is the most underrated thing to do in Mexico. I've traveled throughout the country and it is by far the most beautiful journey you can make. It will take you from up in the mountains, through the desert and the canyons, all the way to the beach. Just breathtaking.

I agree with you as I have traveled el chepe… the landscape is spectacular and so is the train ride… Personally I preferred the journey from Los Mochis to Divisidero (Halt at the copper canyon) and then take the train to creel or chihuahua

El Chepe is perhaps one of the most scenic train journeys I have witnessed. It is an engineering marvel of the Great Mexican people. I am astounded by the beauty of this landscape has. I took El chepe with one night in creel one night with a local family near Urique canyon and it's my favourite place in Mexico and I've been all over the country. I'm now married to a mexican and living in Mexico which is for me one of the most amazing places on earth. This journey is worth every penny.

😀 As I watch this video again I return back to the first time into the Sierra Madre Occidental mountains. It was 40 years ago I crossed the mountains from the east to the west following the rail line when possible or just 2 track roads. Our group of 8 vehicles and with only topo maps without any roads marked, on it we achieved the crossing in 12 days. It was on another trip a few years later I took the first train adventure across the mountains and canyons by rail. In my 100+ adventures into the Majestic Barrancas del Cobre(on 80 trips I added the El CHEPE). I have been working for over a year training my replacements they will graduate in the spring of 2024. This will be my last and at 75 years young it is just time! This is a experience some of us can not get enough of! There is also so much more to see then just the train. Plan on extra weeks to explore, you will not be sorry you experienced this amazing place.

I can hardly imagine how difficult and time consuming it was to build track across the many, many gorges. Banana trees, exotic birds in the mountains.. what a memorable train ride. Up and over.. all the way to the Pacific Ocean in Los Mochis!

our family took the train from El Fuerte to Creel and back again in 1997. From lowland jungle to the oak and pine-forested mountains and canyons at the top and back down again. An amazing ride. Just don't pay any attention to the demolished railcars, which littered the ground below many of the trestles. the present-day train cars appear MUCH more modern than the ones we rode. And the gondola is a new attraction. And the story about the corn beer are true!. I look forward to returning again.

I took the train trip back in 1980.. Chihuahua a Los Mochis.. very scenic. Bus from El Paso to Chihuahua.. boarded train. A very different train nowadays (much more modern train). Personally, I loved the older train.. a person could have run behind the train and kept up.. vendors sold blankets and such from the Tarahumara Indians.

I took this trip 40 years ago and one of our party met a vacationing RR employee and he invited us to the engine and the engineer let us pull the whistle/horn. A couple of our group even stepped out to be outside the engine in the front. I feel ok saying this after 40 years because no one's job would be imperiled. It was a blast. Creel was a cool overnight stay, we met some locals and they took us for a drive. We went in October, still quite hot at the coast, so we did not bring adequate warm clothes for when we were in the mountains. Brrr at night.

Yeas ago, I took a train from Nuevo Laredo to Mexico City. It was in the 100s when we started, and then we traveled some thousands of miles south. When we got out of the train, I was shocked that it was cold there. Mexico City is so high that it has a very cool climate. And out of the train station window, we could see their signature snowcapped volcano, rising much higher.

We stayed overnight in Creel, a week in Chihuahua, toured Pancho Villa's mansion, and I remember a long stop in Cuatemoc where we went to the local open market on the return.

You can get off of the train and spend the night along the route. You can go one way or round trip on the train. We drive into Creel or El Furete to pick up the train. Then ride one way then return another time. We then cross into the canyons with vehicles and cross the Sierra Madre by our vehicles. With 100+ adventures into the area safety is not a concern.

North America's deepest gorge is not in Mexico, as claimed in this video. It's actually Hells Canyon, that forms the border between Idaho and Oregon in the United States. At 8000 feet deep, it's two thousand feet deeper than the one in this video. This one in Mexico is spectacular as well.

I took "La Mula", the standard, not-tourist train. Stopped a lot. I remember the sign in Spanish in each car reminding us to "Be considerate of the other passengers and throw trash out the window". This was in 1990-

Took this in the 80's was supposed to be 11 hours actually took 17 They only had food enough for 2 meals. One of the sights was seeing people living in abandoned wooden box cars that looked like they dated back to the turn of 19th-20th century

Reforestation programs were put in place and new growing trees will absorb way more carbon dioxide as they grow kind of how young human beings have a fast metabolism compare to adults in their 30s. There’s a great deal of care and consideration for the natural habitat of wildlife. It’s a historical project and books will be written and shared through the engineering society worldwide. We’re talking about efficiency in transportation of the public and trade goods an important requirement in any modern society. when I rode it, I was a bit boggled by the guys with machine guns that rode outside the engine and between the cars - but I guess people who take it can be pretty rich compared to the surrounding countryside, so it's bit of a magnet for robberies maybe? it was super beautiful country.

Some years ago some bandits robbed the train and shot a tourist who thought it was actors. The drug cartel hunted them down never to be seen again. They didn't want all the attention it would bring. So actually it's the most protected train ride in the world protected by the drug cartel not those guards on the train

Sadly the tarahumara women they portrayed were wearing tennis shoes, which are not the typical tarahumara sandals, they sported nicely washed hair. Those are signs of staged items for this film. Only a few of the tarahumaras living closer to the touristic spots are here. Not the real deal. P.S. I am from the state of Chihuahua.
