A few fun fact you'd want to learn... - All these elevators on tallest buildings are still.. pulled by cable with a huge counterweight. Yes, cables up to 1 km long! some are made of carbon fiber - The cabin is slowly pressurized and depressurized much like an airplane, to prevent ear popping - On these very tall buildings part of the elevators have been designed to be specifically used for evacuation in case of a fire!

Imagine how big that counterweight is! I wonder how thick the steel ropes are too. Not your standard rope size I’m sure
FYI: ①18 m/s is somewhere around 65 km/h. it's like driving in major roadways in a city. ②you can't feel the speed. you can only feel the acceleration. it was somewhere like 1 m/s2 = 3.6 km/h/s = 0.1g, so you'll get 1.1g accelerating upwards and 0.9g accelerating downwards. CMIIW

Randell the Rogue that's pretty illiterate. Firstly you don't float, but that's not my point. The thing is if you are accelerating down where the G force is not enough to make you fly to the top and end up in stable speed, you will be fine. But your ears will not like the sudden change in pressure.

Is the reason why it's stuck at 10m/s for downwards is because of gravity? Going faster will cause people to hit the ceiling?
@duhkjhwifyyhed6 жыл бұрын
I don't think you should get a lift faster than 10m/s when descending. The "floating" is definitely not the problem, and will never be the problem. It's the air pressure. It won't be comfortable for the ears if you went down that fast. And yes airplanes are pressurised so they can descend fast without making your ears too uncomfortable, but even that still makes your ears uncomfortable.

Can you answer, please ? Why people are very indifférent in fast elevator, and excessivly screaming in little coaster or attraction ? Personally, the thrills are more in the accelerations of fast elevator, because we are standing !!
@cesarbravo8227 жыл бұрын
Maybe the thrill is in the lateral movement? Or maybe higher accelerations? I've taken the elevator at the Shanghai World Financial Centre (the building at 2:32), and the acceleration was rather mild. I'd imagine this elevator is similar.

One issue concerns me always: WHY people and children shout and overly react, afraid and have fun in a carousel, a roller coaster, even small or attraction, and remain completely stoic, unperturbed and indifferent as if they did not feel the ground that gives way under their feet and raised their feet for 36 seconds (how people, they are very strong !) in all very fast elevators, especially this one, because to have tried everything they make me as much STANDING effects balancing on tiptoe a great attraction ??? In a roller coaster, acceleration effects are reduced by being seated and secured. Can anyone give me the answer ???

These are no longer the worlds fastest sadly, now that the Guangzhou CTF Finance Centre is open to the public, their Hitachi lifts can take passenger up the the observation deck at a speed at 20 meters/second (and up to 21m/s when the machinery is pushed to its limits) unlike this which can travel at 18m/s (and up to 20.5m/s when the machinery is pushed to its limits) The title for this lift as the worlds fastest was unfortunately very short lived :(

Fun fact: in chinese culture number 13 is lucky because means Assured Growth or Easy to Live, while 4 was already unlucky for most eastern countries due to the pronunciation like Si is the chinese word for Death and this is why many buildings in china omit the 4th floor but the Shanghai Tower is the only exception to this rule

Beautiful tower, so elegant, and so very tall! It's a marvel of modern engineering! But the view is kind of ugly, you can really notice just how polluted the air is in Shanghai, now I understand why the population wears face masks. I pray they can solve their pollution problems before it's too late. It also looks as though the river is about to flood the city. I know, as an amateur climatologist, that if global warming continues polar ice cap melting, resulting in ocean rise, that beautiful city and its 18 millions residents (just a rough guess) will be one of the worst affected cities in the world as most of it is so low to the ocean levels. I've never been outside of the Americas (I'm in Toronto, Canada), but I'm really hoping to see China, it's explosive growth tied in with such a rich cultural heritage is one thing I'm dying to see, well, that, and the incredible skyscrapers that are in all major cities there. Does anyone have any tips on what are the main sites to see in Shanghai, and Hong Kong?
