World’s population hits 8 billion, UN says - BBC News

The world's population has hit eight billion, just 11 years after passing the seven-billion milestone, the United Nations has said.
After a big surge in the middle of the 20th Century, population growth is already slowing down.
It could take 15 years to reach nine billion and the UN doesn't expect to reach 10 billion until 2080.
It's hard to calculate the number of people in the world accurately, and the UN admits its sums could be out by a year or two.

Weird to think that when I was born In 2004 the world had about 6 Billion people on it, then in 2011 when about 6/7 it rose up to about 7 Billion. Now I'm 18 and it's 8 Billion. That's Insane!

The thing that always amazes me is that around 70,000 years ago the global human population declined sharply to, a rough estimation of, between 500-2000. Just goes to show how closely related to eachother we all are, 8 billion from ~2000.

@@thatdognotthepuppy5809I don't know if you were implying the Younger Dryas impact hypothesis or simply any other asteroid impact; but it seems very plausible. Concerning the Younger Dryas impact which happened about 12,800 years ago; there is a growing body of physical evidence that this catastrophic asteroid impact has wiped out ancient technologically advanced civilizations. If you are interested in this story; I would highly recommend Joe Rogan his podcasts with Graham Hancock and Randall Carson. With modern advances in the physical sciences; their theories are quickly gaining traction. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iKnQqGybnt-Cd9E kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZnmYfXaCoc99ntE kzbin.info/www/bejne/qnfPcnmlbJ2rpbM

@@Edseltje I wasn't referring to the Younger Dryas specifically, but it did influence my thinking- I'm a huge fan of Hancock and Carson! Their episodes on JRE were the best. I have a feeling that events like the YDH are a cycle that humanity goes through, it's entirely possible that we've been "reset" a number of times throughout our history.

The truth people don’t acknowledge enough is that we all want a bit of luxury. Things like decent room for ourselves, some amount of privacy, access to electricity, warm water, heating / cooling depending on the area ( sometimes both ) and some degree of technology, ranging from things like access to the internet to other means of private entertainment, access to transportation… We all want some degree of freedom in these choices. The result is that, the more people there are, the more recourses to we need to satisfy these core demands. So far, so basic. The more interesting question is how we could get to a point where all people got less children without people feeling threatened by the progress of their neighbours so we could actually gain more from developing new technology than just to satisfy the ever increasing core demands to fuel a growth that is ultimately meant to protect us from others who at the core, mostly want the same things. We all see robotics and AI on the rise, and here in the west we have already begun debating things like a potential universal basic income, with topics like immortality via progress in health related issues becoming potentially possible and seriously exploring ideas like the colonisation of other planets or even the entire galaxy and beyond, things that used to be unthinkable, seemingly almost beginning to come within our reach. Much of human civilization as we know it is slowly coming to a close and we are not even ready for the actual implications, let alone the consequences. On one hand, getting less children happens naturally when enough progress is made. On the other, it mainly happens because having any more becomes unaffordable due to the ever increasing costs. Our current reality is already sometimes quite dystopian and in my opinion, this will get a lot worse in some parts of the world before it gets better because the demand we already have is spawning so much competition, not just internationally but also internally, that the room for compromise and working on universal solutions is being suffocated.

The second one from agent smith in the movie The matrix (1999):"It came to me when I tried to classify your species and I realized that you're not actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment but you humans do not. You move to an area and you multiply and multiply until every natural resource is consumed and the only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet. You're a plague and we are the cure."

I completely agree with you, John! I also agree with Elyes. I have obvious symptoms of a rare genetic disorder called Homocystinuria (i.e. a bent sternum, learning disabilities which put me in special ed, highest myopia, disorders etc.) and now I have end stage cancer and clots. I also look like a short, Hispanic girl but I'm not. I'm also in my early 40s so I've experienced prejudice and racism that was just very obvious. Plus I've had to deal with my mild to moderate narc mother. I mean, she could have been worse but she's very difficult to say the least and she has my disorder. My father was a computer programmer yet still had kids with her (four of them.) I mean, there's been many times he was really nice to me but he never got me the appropriate help when I was a kid except when I was 19 to see a therapist but he never was with me to see this person. He may have if I had asked harder but instead my narc/disordered mom went with me. Sorry, my life has been a disaster since day one and my mother is hard to deal with. Oh well, que sara sara as they say. Now my father is 77 with end stage prostate cancer and clear signs of parkinsons (i.e. many missing teeth, weak voice, needs a cane, can't remember/think much, eye issues...) I realize most people wont experience what I have but for people to Gamble* with their kids by literally creating them in this existence when we have no idea how the kids will turn out, plus they'll experience the dying process at some point is Not Fair to them. Anyway, I did read David Benatar's book Better Never to Have Been. I got it as a gift a couple of Christmas's ago. Sounds depressing but it's a realistic book for those curious about it.

Having more people decreases the worth of the individual, increases internal competition for access to various recourses and also destabilises the climate as well as the environment. We all want at least electricity, clean water, heating&/cooling, some variety to our nutrition etc., access to the internet, some degree of privacy in the form of our own personal space etc. Not to mention transportation, various technological devices like smartphones etc. and healthcare when we become ill or grow old. Consequently, instead of of trying to grow mainly quantitatively, we should focus far more on the quality of our existence. With AI and robotics on the rise, many professions will die out forever and looking into a not so distant future, we will most likely begin to engineer our own genetics and use technology to merge our bodies with new technologies. It will be simple things at first but this kind of tendency can not be reversed, only slowed down. We already try to eliminate certain diseases based on similar research and hearing aids are widespread. It does not take much imagination to continue this same process to arrive at currently impossible results, The competition between our governments for our sake often drives us to peruse ever increasing quantitative growth but for us, the common citizens, this is ultimately a race to the bottom. The fewer of us there are, the higher our value for society. The strength of the common people was always in their numbers but we are slowly loosing this advantage to armed drones and other similar things. If we do not wish to risk tyranny we should therefore ensure that, before our power dwindles for good, our societies are ready for the challenges of tomorrow. You may not see it yet but we are all becoming increasingly replaceable. This could echo in paradise or doom and how it turns out all depends on every one of us.

@@samueldsouza8797 I am not saying that we are not being valued ( certainly more than in the past ) but there is a worrying trend in the world where many governments keep pressing for more and more population and I fear that the trend may reverse. Take a nation like China. They currently have so many people that the worth of their citizens is sharply declining. And while it's an extreme example, similar developments may occur elsewhere, although to lesser degrees. Also, one can always be valued more.

Not exactly, I merely outlined some basic human needs. A human need I did not mention explicitly since I deemed it even more obvious than the rest is to leave a legacy and to raise children. Consequently, I would essentially advocate for an eventual implementation a sort of global two child policy. No exceptions. Weather or not that’s the best solution? Who knows. On the other hand, sarcastic remarks like your own certainly won’t help us. They can however be amusing from time to time.

@@Arcaryon my friend my country has a dictator that push two child policy, we're 4th most populous country right now so I think two child policy would only backfire just like Chinese one child policy also that policy is the reason why Chinese population declining since they're practically stuck with population gender ratio, curbing population growth is dangerous since human isn't like chicken that grow fast, you'll need at least 18 years to develop one into effective workforce and the cost of investment is extremely high per-person, the better way would be either distribute resource more evenly or just push Elon Musk to get Mars Colony ready early and get resource outside the Earth so basically it's either more income equality or Age of Space Exploration (Personally I'd take second option since it'll be awesome)

Well the birth rate in developed countries is "negative" as in per 2 people there are 1.6 or something along those lines of children born on average.. People in the poorest countries and continents however are shooting out babies hence why the population on the planet is skyrocketing. In poor countries like Niger you have 6.8 of births per woman on average, Somalia has 6.0, Congo 5.8, Mali 5.8, Chad 5.6, Angola 5.4, etc.. etc.. These countries also receive humanitarian aid further assisting kids born with nothing to survive hence the population goes up and up.

It's funny. I noticed on the "world population clock" a couple of months ago that we were at 7,970,000,000 so I googled what the average population increase per day, which said 200,000 people, then using that number, I worked out that it wouldn't roll over until January 8th. Which seemed an awful long way away. So I did a bit more digging outside of Google and found a more reliable source that said 220,000 people per day. But that number still put the roll over close to the end of the year. Within a couple of weeks. But it looks like even the 220,000 per day average is wrong. I mean, I know an average doesn't mean that's exactly how much it will increase each day without fail. It just makes you think twice about even apparently credible information. But at the same time, world population growth/decay isn't a very easy thing to measure. Much of it has to do with statistics and mathematical models, such as the one I tried to produce to predict when the population would roll over. And although I'm no mathemagician (wink) I know my math was sound. It's the figures that are wonky because it's practically imossible to get a perfectly accurate figure for how many people are born/die each day without having people out there literally counting. Which I don't think most people would be very receptive of. But imagine the data!
