The sharp knife is quartzite, which was originally sandstone but has been heated and squeezed to the point where it recrystallized. The layers are remnants of the original sandstone. Quartz is very hard and pretty strong so it makes a pretty good knife blade, good work!

might be worth trying to find some "Banded Gneiss" (yes, it's really pronounced like the word "nice", so you can make all the dumb puns you want with that) that has some nice straight lines in it. it's a different type of granite, but should work better than the mottled variety you used here. not sure what that pink rock was, though others seem to think it's pink quartz. if you wanna try doing something REALLY fancy, you can actually grow your very own rubies an arc welder with carbon rods, and a chunk of graphite. rubies are a material called Corundum (same as sapphires), that's a 9 on a mohs hardness scale, only 1 below diamond. it should be able to get sharpened into a VERY sharp edge, and also be fairly durable. I would strongly recommend checking out NightHawkinLight's older video on making rubies, but instead of making a small bowl that produces a button, make longer square mold for a bar, or even just buying a graphite mold meant for making gold bars. it's a pretty simple process.
@mcdodge66794 ай бұрын
The unidentified rock is likely some sort of Rose Quartz Agate or just straight up Rose Quartz, this wouldn't be too unusually since rose quartz is somewhat common in new hampshire and the northeast!
@gonnerkat87534 ай бұрын
the pink color comes from hematite that was present in the (once sandstone) before it was metamorphosized into a pink quartzite rock. the pink coloration is noticeably banded throughout the rock, which likely reflects how the sandstone looked before it was metamorphosized. the grain structure is also a dead giveaway. rose quartz has a cloudy pink color, sometimes clearer in other areas where you can almost see into the stone. the rock he showed didn't display those properties. then again, without being able to see it in person, you can only say so much.
