"Pure freedom" Honestly, I've only felt it a few times. Sure, I feel it in degrees quite often, but that pure stuff is harder to get. Camping from the back of my motorcycle gives me a lot of freedom potential....gives me the ability to access so much solitude and serenity deep in wilderness areas--so quickly--it's amazing. Having nature and beauty wash over me at high speed then finding the right spot to soak in the ambience and relax while eating good food and sleeping comfortably under the stars.
I fell in love with the idea of camping with motorcycles back in 2019. So I bought a used XT 250 to learn. I did drills in snowy fields to learn wheel wash recovery. I practiced decent braking, hill climbing. and riding off camber. The next spring I bought my 701 LR knowing that a couple months putting around in the fields was hardly enough to prepare me for a bike this big... I rationalized the purchase thinking I could learn on the job. As you can easily see, my bike has been dropped a lot! I've dropped it so much that the radiator started leaking and needed to be replaced. Lol... I guess that's why it's called the "the school of hard knocks". It has a little over 5000 miles on it now with the vast majority of those being off-road. A year ago I crashed a little harder than usual. I don't remember the fall, just waking up facedown on the rocks with my foot folded in half under my bike. The break was quite severe, at least six bones broken--most broken in more than one place. A surgery involving three screws and reattaching ligaments on a dislocated toe held everything in place for healing. These days I ride more cautiously. I'm learning my lesson--injuries just aren't worth the thrill of a moment. I built my bike wanting every mechanical advantage I could possibly have for dirt riding, especially on loose rock...to make up for my lack of skill and seat time. At least that's what I tell myself, truth is I can't resist tinkering. I do it with every aspect of my life. I see everything from the perspective of an inventor and I have to play with ideas that might make it better.
"The problem with inventors is that they don't know when to stop inventing"
I heard that quote some twenty or so years ago, I use it to to keep myself in check... at least I try to control my urge. To invent is to explore ideas which means you don't really know what you'll get until you build and test. I once had a new pair of rubber mud boots. I was surprised how comfortable they were but thought I might like them even more if I cut them down just a little. They were cheap so why not, I cut them and tried them out. I was right. I did like them just a little bit better which made me wonder about cutting them just a little further. I cut them again and, then again... Eventually I realized that I had ruined the boots which were now shoes. In the trash they went. Lol! What a waste... I'm just so curious that I can't help myself.

The 701 looks and sounds great. I miss my KTM 990 Adventure. I just recently sold it off because I hadn't used it in 4 years while undergoing cancer treatments and a kidney transplant but I sure miss it. The mods all sound great. The best thing I ever did with my KTM was upgrade the suspension. I ripped off the forks and added some Race Tech valves and customized the shim job. That completely changed the whole bike. I could ride it like a lightweight desert race bike and blow over whoops and baby heads all day long without blinking an eye. The video was awesome. Thanks for sharing another adventure. We sure have some beautiful scenery here in Utah.

You inspired me with your previous ride videos. It had been 50 years since I'd been on a motorcycle regularly (we owned a Suzuki shop as a kid, and I rode the first generation RM125 on motocross tracks throughout the Midwest), so at 60 I bought a new DR-650. I got licensed and have been riding the thousands of miles of gravel roads that surround my house in hopes of hitting up the BDRs in South Dakota, Utah, Idaho, etc., when I retire in 898 days (who is counting?). My Firebox stove will come with me where I can. I'm going to try to tarp tent camp where possible (but mosquitos and bugs may turn me into a regular tent camper). Thanks for the inspiration, camping examples, etc.

Consider yourself lucky about the fuel lines. I have a very expensive 2020 SUV that has bad crank bearings and a fuel pump that "could quit at any time while driving" because of parts substituted during supply shortages in 2020. Replacement parts are 6+ months out...

20:00: is that bigfoot? lol Just kidding - just thought I would give you a hard time. I have a lot of memories in a lot of those areas you explored. Lots of hikes, camping trips, etc. One of the more recent memories, though, is for one of my classes while working on my bachelor's degree at USU Eastern, my classmates and I assisted the DWR in collaring deer. There's some deer running around out somewhere by the historic bridge that I personally covid tested, helped weigh, measure, take the body temp, or attach a GPS collar to. But anyway, amazing and beautiful country isn't it? Thanks for sharing this awesome adventure.

just got mine in that mail. i have a question about the 8oz butane adapter i got with it. unlike the propane adapter i also got, the inner brass part sticks out further so when its completely screwed down it seals to the inner O-ring but it leaves a ~1-1.5mm gap between the orange outer part and the washer style seal on the isobutane valve fitting. is that normal?

why heck would you put an 18" rear tire on the front! that's wild.. must steer terribly? yes you have over modified it into a frankenstein bike! haha but whatever works.. i'd encourage you to go back to foot brake and clutch... and for the love of god put a 21" wheel and tire back on the front! reminds me of a 1987 Yamaha Big Wheel 200! all that matters is you are out there having fun though:)
@fireboxstove
@fireboxstove 5 ай бұрын
There it is... Lol. I knew this was coming. Verbatim! I love it and I get it. You're right, the steering is slower And you have to be deliberate about it but the trade-off is more useful to me than super snappy steering. If I had excellent foot break control I might have stuck with that. I'm an old dog and learning that much precision with my foot It seemed a long ways off. The recluse clutch saves me from stalling in technical situations. I don't know what it is but there's some kind of physics going on when a bike stalls (at least a single cylinder) it seems to throw the bike down. The auto clutch prevents that and I don't drop my bike nearly as often. I'm having a ton of fun on my bike with a lot less frustrations. Perfect for me in my learning late in life situation. Thanks for the advice! I could keep working towards that level of excellence but I've already broken one foot and I would rather get to the having fun part. Cheers my friend!

I have a Husky 701 also, do you find it’s geared too high for rough, steep technical riding? I feel like mine is. Maybe you regeared yours. Just curious.
@fireboxstove
@fireboxstove 5 ай бұрын
Yes. Regearing was one of the first things I addressed. From the factory they have a 120 mph top speed which is a little nuts. Between lower gearing and the recluse clutch I never stall my bike which was the main cause of me dropping my bike.

Don’t put cream on your cinnamon rolls. It disintegrates the dough too much. Instead spread the dough with softened or melted butter, sprinkle with the cinnamon sugar then roll up. After they’re baked, you can put some cream, cream cheese or even more cinnamon sugar on it. Cook it low and slow and you shouldn’t have to turn it. Try mixing some of that cinnamon sugar in with your coffee grounds before brewing for a sweet breakfast brew to go with your roll.

Hey Steve!, you spotted me at the grocery store as I was headed out on a ride to that same area. It was my first time out that way, you've given me some more ideas. I had my own little Firebox with me too.

Makes me wish that Yamaha or Honda would make a light weight adv bike. The CRF450RL is close, but a larger displacement or lightweight twin would be better. Then we’d get better quality than what KTM is offering.

Have you looked into the Yamaha 700 Tenere? I haven't and know nothing about them. I started out on a KLR650 then sold that off and picked up a KTM 990 Adventure. The KTM was insanely awesome.

Don't we all my friend. Still waiting for DRZ update that may never come. The Chinese are starting to fill the void though, so maybe we'll see something someday.
