To me, the song is about a person with depression, who feels as though they can’t live up to their family’s name (when AJR talk about the grandpa who fought in World War Two and how “they feel like such a fool” in comparison. They also feel guilty because they know that there are people in the world who have problems worse than theirs. At the end, they’re talking to the one they love and telling them that they can maybe help them get through their depression.

The song is actually about different peoples problems. The meaning of the song is, whatever problem you have, it’s still bad no matter what. It’s kinda like how the “my life was harder” trend being bad because it’s comparing problems, that’s why the song says “next to them, my shit don’t feel so grand”, it actually means “next to them, my life problems don’t feel bad, but I can’t help myself from feeling bad”
