India's vast railway network, built by the British in the 19th century, played a critical role in both colonial trade and the country's fight for independence. Spanning 71,000 miles of track and connecting over 7,500 stations, the railways remain essential to India's economy and everyday life. From overcrowded trains in the unbelievable heat to historic stations like Muzaffarpur and Lucknow, this journey reveals the challenges of train travel in India. Along the way, we uncover stories of resilience-from the Sepoy Rebellion and Gandhi's anti-colonial campaign to the horrors of Partition and the increasing demand for women-only carriages. The adventure concludes with a ride on the Kangra Valley Railway, to the Himalayas.

For all Indians claiming it is an old documentary, approximately 10~12 years old well i guess you are right. As per the channel it is claimed in a comment that this is a docu from 2018, so my fellow Indians here i will give you two points to verify it: 1. 4:31 You can see a bill board or an advertisement which clearly says a date from 2014 and also there is a billboard reading as AIRCEL, i found it to be a telecom company, and it is advertising a topup for a 3G sim i guess, and i found on internet that India had it’s first 4G rollout in 2012 and got a major coverage by 2015~2016. 2. 7:52 As the serial number on the train starts from 13548 and as per my research, the starting two numbers stands for the year of manufacturing i.e., this coach is manufactured in 2013. My conclusion is, yes India might have its own problems, but westerners should have to stop judging them as per their standards and yes this is an old video from 2014.

With all due respect. This documentary would have been relevant 2 decades back. Today's Indian Railways are 99% electrified and has inbuilt Semi high speed trains like Vande Bharat. But you being a foreigner still showed the courage and grit to travel in a third class on an Indian train and that to while journeying through bihar and up. Non violence moment: While every other freedom fighters were hunted, jailed, shot or hanged till death, Gandhi and the people from the Indian Congress were happy, or worst house arrested. 3. Crowded coaches in North part of India: In North part of India esp Bihar or UP, majority of the unreserved passengers are ticket less. So free ride, and less comfort.

While the British might have started building the railways in India, the network we have today wasn't built by the British. And neither did the British build the railways in India so that different princely states could "feel more united and Indian". They built the rils to transport the loot to the ports and transport their toops quickly across the length and breadth of the country. Also note that we have some of the cheapest and the most expensive luxurious trains. You can certainly book a seat if you wish to travel in one of those compartments. In fact, a normal express train has about 22 coaches of which only 2-3 are unreserved class. There are about 12-14 reserved sleeper class coaches, and 8-9 Air conditioned coaches. If you are an Indian, you can book your train ticket on your phone using an app. Also, in case of any problem that you face on the train you can ask for help either by messaging the railways or by tweeting about it, or by using the rail madad app.

I went to India ten years ago for an AIESEC program in summer. I loved it. India is intense, very different from where I am from but it just makes the adventure more worthy. I remember feeling the HOT wet air simmering my skin, my sweat soaking my clothes, and I literally peed in my pants on the train because it was too crowded and I could not move, at all, let alone to the restroom for hours. These experiences may sound horrible to many people but to me they make it all special. If being in comfort with ease is all you want, maybe staying at home is a better idea.
