WWI started out like the American Civil War. The tactics didn't fit the deadly weaponry involved and it was just mass armies attacking well defended and armed defenses. It took until 2017 to begin to use the combined arms and to adjust to modern warfare. Though the casualties were still immense, the allies were able to take the offensive using firepower more than just sending millions of men into a field of slaughter. It was a horrific war and was only the precursor to an even more devastating war. Humans never seem to learn though. War accomplishes only horror and death. The politicians send our best and bravest men and women to fight their wars. Unfortunately, that will never change.

I wonder what happened to Petain in WWII? I mean, the guy saved France at Verdun. Why’d he collaborate with the Nazis in WWII?

He must've had the philosophy of "go along to get along." And it must be admitted there's something to be said in favor of that outlook sometimes. I mean, after France was routed on the field of battle, there was no amount of "resistance" that would have liberated the country if the Germans were committed to staying. But fighting a guerilla war no doubt would have created (and did, to a degree, create) plenty of chaos, death and destruction. I suspect he got more mixed up in cooperating than he'd imagined, and the Germans no doubt took advantage of his age and weakness, but once embarking on a course of action that seems wise, there's often no telling where you will end up. Few indeed foresaw how devious and evil the Nazi would reveal themselves to be, in the early months of 1940. Some Poles knew by then. Some Jews knew. Some political rivals knew... But in sunny France the Germans surely had a different look and attitude. It must be remembered that Petain was concerned first and foremost with the fate of France. He could not run his country to best please the Americans or the Russians or the English. Indeed England lost some street cred after fleeing from Dunkirk and leaving many Frenchmen behind, and earned some true hatred after later attacking the French fleet. By '44 or '45 it was a different world. People who had placed different bets were ascendant; and it was Petain's time to fade away. But I do believe he has been unfairly pilloried. I'm sure he loved France with all his heart.

I wish the author had spent more ink on the Dardanelles, Salonika and the Jackie Fisher's idea of forcing the Denmark Straits; rather than just dismissing them out of had as "amateur strategy."

@@ditto1958 I asked Lester. Because I read the book and it's a book of history. So the agenda was the history. Lester apparently has a different idea/meaning for the "agenda." So I asked him.

The result of the war like the results and documented history of all wars gives too much credit to the soldiers sailors and Marines who fought it and not enough to the general public who supported the armed forces. This war like so many others that would come was one by two underlying factors logistics and propaganda.
