This much effort to put tracks on a little Renault FT. Can you imagine the effort to put tracks on a Panther, Tiger, or IS-2?
@Anlushac116 жыл бұрын
Maus yeah that would have been a back killer, would for sure needed a cable attached to a vehicle to pull them up and over. I think T95 used a pair of HVSS type tracks per side, so not as bad as one super wide track.

Congratulations for your job. Amazing. Gal Patton began in FT17 Renault tank in WWI when he was captain. Don't forget these brave young men from USA were ready to give their lives for freedom in Europe one century ago. A wink and thanks a lot from France. Little story about this tank : I saw others FT17 Renault tank in France, Invalides Museum in Paris and Museum of armoured vehicles in Saumur with the front wheels were made of steel. We can watch it on Wikipedia or on the web KZbin video. Between 1917 to 1918, Renault and others french companies built 3000 tanks FT17. USA built 950 FT17. This FT17 was the first tank with turret, cheapest, fastest 8km/h in WWI and to be built in production mass in a short time easily. FT17 tank was able to go through the enemy's trenches easily in the summer of 1918. It was used in a large numbers following the infantry troops and with aircraft assaults shooting in the german trenches together. In four months, the front lines collapsed and germans had to go back to their border lines before the armistice of 1918. It was the biltzkrieg before 1940. FT17 Renault tank was called the tank of Victory. In 1918, germans didn't believe in these tanks. It was a just a fat and big turttle can for them. In 1940, oddly enough, germans used this offensive tactic but the french forgot it.
@rawnut777 жыл бұрын
I wanted to say within a fully rotating turret above FT17. FT17 was the first to use it like this. Yes, british tank MKII was the first entered in WWI's fights in 1916, during the summer, on the Somme battlefield, but turrets were on the sides with four cannons and so rotating of these turrets were limited. MKII was a heavy tank but FT17 was a light tank. It was a great difference with drivability and speed and also cost of production and mass production. The french learned about the half failure of Somme battle with MKII : too slow and not enough engaged and scattered and breakdown. And more MKII was an easy target for german artillery. In summer of 1918, FT17 made the difference with manoeuvrability, high speed for this era and above all used in large quantities. During the victorious counter-attacks in 1918, MKII was engaged in large numbers too supported by RAF on the german trenches. The german didn't believe in these tanks in first world war. It's amazing ! Suddenly, I think about panzer's tactic in 1940. French HQ forgot it just before WWII. In 1940, french tank tactic was the same battle of the Somme in 1916 but not summer of 1918. That's surprising !

How sure are you that it's an FT17? I think it's just a regular French FT, due to the location of the exhaust pipe (if the tank is facing you, the exhaust pipe will be on its left side if it's French, and on it's right side if it's the American FT17) in this case, it looks like the French FT
@agwrangler8 жыл бұрын
just so you know, that comment makes absolutely zero sense.
@mr.svenson34068 жыл бұрын
Yes, it does make sense. The Americans adapted the pre-existing French Renault FT in 1917, slapped the exhaust pipe on the opposite side of the tank, and called it the Renault FT 17 to make it their own. I'm asking if you're positive that this is the American Renault FT 17, because the exhaust pipe's location tells me otherwise.
@agwrangler8 жыл бұрын
are you high??? The Americans had the M1917. It wasn't anything like the FT17 Renault, which the French had, and the US first used in combat. 1. Your statements arent accurate. 2. This is an FT17 Renault.
@mr.svenson34068 жыл бұрын
agwrangler From Wikipedia: The Renault FT, frequently referred to in post-World War I literature as the "FT-17" or "FT17", was a French light tank that was among the most revolutionary and influential tank designs in history. The FT was the first production tank to have its armament within a fully rotating turret. The Renault FT's configuration - crew compartment at the front, engine compartment at the back, and main armament in a revolving turret - became and remains the standard tank layout. Over 3,000 Renault FT tanks were manufactured by French industry, most of them during the year 1918. Another 950 of an almost identical licensed copy of the FT (the M1917) were made in the United States, but not in time to enter combat.
@mr.svenson34068 жыл бұрын
agwrangler You're trying really hard to turn this into an argument, which I don't understand. We have conflicting facts, no reason to insinuate that I'm retarded. I assumed people only called the American Renault the "FT-17", but I see now that it was the M1917. So, thanks for clearing that up. I had always thought the FT and FT-17 were different things that the general public just assumed to be the same. Too bad I had to learn it from such an insulting teacher...
