Presented by Professor David Reynolds. Historian Professor David Reynolds reassesses Stalin’s role in the life and death struggle between Germany and Russia in World War Two, which he argues was ultimately more critical for British survival than ‘Our Finest Hour’ in the Battle of Britain itself

If Russia didn't attack and weaken Poland earlier, it would have created a buffer of resistence against Germany. That was a huge mistake.

Then Germany would have occupied the whole of Poland
@simonw1313

Hardly. By occupying the eastern half of Poland they creating a buffer (in terms of space) between the Soviet Union and Germany as otherwise the Germans would have over-run the entirety of Poland.

September 1939 British Prime minister Nevil Chamberlain declared war on Germany following Germany's invasion of Poland. June 1941 Hitler attacked the USSR. December 7th 1941 the USA joined the war when they were attacked by the Japanese and when some days later, Hitler declared war on the USA. Britain was on its own for over two years, held out in France for as long as possible and defended itself successfully in the Battle of Britain. Holding out on your own for more than 2 years is hardly crying out for help from anyone.

With all due respect, a completely idiotic statement. Russia provided the manpower to do the lionshare of the fighting to destroy the Wehrmacht, but they would have collapsed like a house of cards, if not for the unimaginable amount of aid the USA and Britain provided them
