Tons of equipment was abandoned during the battles in North Africa during WW2 . Lucky that nothing really rusts very fast in the dry heat there . I think tons of war surplus equipment was sold to many of the Arab nations after WW2 . In am guessing that is how STG 44 ended up there and proberly other items like MP40 's from Germany war surplus stockpiles. Most of the major post war powers sold their out of date tanks planes and Guns to the middle East many most still be standing around to this day . My Grandfather served in the British 8 th Army in the Desert campaigns first against the Italians and later against the Africa Corps . He survived the whole war from Belgium 1939 through to Italy 1945 , been wounded in action twice , and was then gifted with a good family and a long life until his passing at 99 years in 2018 . I was the first Grand Child and he spent many hrs tell me stories about the war , some good and some very unpleasant stories . Those horrors gave him nightmare for the rest of his life . But he was always happy always wanted to just have a laugh and a joke . Tough for sure but a great guide in my life . Who I dearly miss , year these items could tell many stories most are better left untold though . RIP all those lost souls who never got to live a full live or see their children or wife's again.

Lugers are loved and were common war trophies...
@rbfilms47528 жыл бұрын
Lugers weren't really all that rare, and were still being produced in German factories until 1942. They had a certain prestige being a half-century old design, but tens of thousands were brought back to the US. Taking war trophies was discouraged by most of the Allied command (and downright prohibited in many units), and pistols happened to be very easy to sneak out as opposed to rifles or submachine-guns.

Jman, A few days after viewing this, I was watching some episodes of the TV series "LOST", from 2006. In season 1, Disc 3 there is an episode in which the Iraqi character Sayeed is having flashbacks to his Iraqi Army service days. One setting is at an Iraqi army installation, and I noticed that there is a tank being used as a prop. It appears to be the Porsche "Elephant" Tank Destroyer, built on that company's version of the Tiger Tank. Which World War 2 tanks are NOT found in Iraq?
@jmantime8 жыл бұрын
it was probably just a pro - the Porsche "Elephant" Tank Destroyer wasn't used in iraq - the only german tank destroyer used in iraq in ww2 was the bison
@patrickcloutier68018 жыл бұрын
It looked quite real, so I assume it is real - rust and all. A lot of ex-German surplus equipment made its way to the Arab World after WW2, as you have made us aware. The Panzer IV was found in the Syrian inventory during the Arab-Israeli wars, as late as 1973. Perhaps someone with a good amount of cash bought the Elephant TD, for a personal collection, and through the fortunes of war, it ended up as a TV prop.
@patrickcloutier68018 жыл бұрын
I took a screen shot of the vehicles, but am not able to attach to the comment section. In any case, the LOST episode was "Solitary" and the tanks appear in the first minutes of the opening credits.
@Celeon999A8 жыл бұрын
I just took a look at the said episode of LOST and i think i may have found the answer to that mystery. ;-) First of all, i think the tank was edited into that scene. The strange unsharpness of the image once the camera starts panning and the even more questionable totally black shadow underneath it makes me pretty convinced it wasn't there when the scene was filmed. Yes it is an Elephant tank destroyer and it is definitely the one on display at the US Army Ordnance Museum, Aberdeen, Maryland. The LOST prop department propably took a photo of it and used a video editing software to put it into the scene. That was cheaper and easier to do than to get themselves a real tank or to build a propfor a scene thats just a few seconds long. ;-) de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elefant_(Jagdpanzer)#/media/File:Elefant_USAOM-01.jpg
@patrickcloutier68018 жыл бұрын
Celeon999A I think that the second, more distant Elefant definitely looks like it was inserted digitally. The one in the foreground looks more convincing, and since German surplus showed up all over the Middle East after WW2, it certainly seemed possible. But AFAIK, only 80 or so Elefants were produced, is that correct? So the chance of one showing up in Iraq is probably remote. And computer graphics are probably advanced enough to make the nearest tank look very real.

in some way it is sad to see this. Nothing good comes out of weapons but these machines served their duties with their crews (british german american russians doesnt matter) in a different time, they should be placed in museums and allowed to rest so we can remember and learn from the mistakes of that time that still haunt us today, even in those regions instead of still being used for what little gain they now can give. They were used in battles far more terrible that we have seen till today and I bet if these machines could talk they would tell us haunting stories about the futility of war... I imagine the! like a very very old horse having to work in world sounded by tractors or my grandfather in his last years before he passed away being pressed back into service... it wouldn't feel right. Maybe one day some will find themselves restored in some museum.

I was deployed to Iraq 3 times. It really was a treasure trove of old WW1 and WW2 tanks and stuff from the later wars like the Iran Iraq war. I wish I had cared more back then and took pictures of all the tanks and trucks just rusting over there. Allot of Cold War Russian tanks and trucks of course just laying around. The Iraqi's just parked all this stuff in clusters and parts of their bases they weren't using. There was also some old US and British tanks and such over there as well. But they were all old A1 versions of stuff we still use today like the M113 and the Paladin field artillery tracks. Old British tanks as well from probably the 80's and early 90's. Yeah Iraq had ALLOT more than just WW1 and WW2 stuff laying around. But there was allot of those wars military stuff laying around. The old US tracks and artillery tracks were most likely from the Iran/Iraq war. And Iraq just captured it and brought it back as trophies. And yeah the more RARE tanks from the great wars were taken back to the US by the Army and Marines to be put on display at museums and military bases. So some of it was saved from completely rusting away. Yeah it was a weird thing to see, all those old tanks and such just sitting there when we rolled in lol.

I've seen footage of YPG/J forces using tanks converted from tractors and pickups that look a lot like German A7V tanks from WWI with great effect. If you're fighting lightly armed infantry, like they often are, these sorts of tanks can still be used efficiently. It looks like some of these are actually war memorials. I saw recently that in Novorossiya, separatist rebels have been using a JS-II that they'd simply pulled off a memorial and repaired, actually using it on the frontline. The T-34s and PPShs were probably Soviet hand me downs, when the USSR and Iraq were allies- likely saw service in WWII. The USSR often sold outmoded equipment to allies, not unlike the USA selling F-35s to its Japanese and Australian allies at absurb prices.
