One of my great grand father was colonel in the French army before the war, he died in 1914 at the battle of the Marne, leading his men, an inscription to his tribute can be read in the church of his native village. An other great grand father was gassed at Verdun, he did not die, but came back seriously ill. He died 20 years later, from his wounds and lung problems. He couldn't work at the factory anymore (he was in a village 40 kms west of Paris). His boss who also served in the trenches could not fire him, so he recruited him as his chauffeur and they became good friends. France is the ally that suffered the most in 4 years of war, 1.5 million dead, 4.2 millions wounded and fought like lions from the beginning of the war. The French contribution was instrumental for the final victory.

@@filipborin555 there was only one single naval battle of any significance and it was barely a British victory over German ships. A naval blockade wasn't going to harm Germany much at all. Brits were not winning this war without France taking most of the blows on the Western Front. Now, if you want to talk about the little European skirmish in the early 1940s... then yeah, can't give to much credit to France for that.

I'm from America and I admit that most schools don't educate us on the full facts that happened during these wars. But to go out of your way and to do your own research is probably the best thing ever. Having an interest in other countries histories besides my own causes me to respect every ethnicity and cultures. When people tell me they're from somewhere else in the world you should see my face. So enthusiastic about it. I respect European countries as well as my Latin neighbors and Canada. Yep, I love history lol

60 million artillery shells turned this 20 mile stretch of the front into a literal human slaughterhouse for 302 days. The total amount of casualties on both sides is unknown and ranges from 750 thousand to 1.25 million have been reported in different books on the battle. The French army estimated that they lost seventy thousand men a month during this battle. The most striking description of this area I read in an account a German soldier sent home was that you could smell the battlefield from several miles away before you could ever see it. The stench of death and decay was that potent.

Verdun today is fascinating. The monuments of war are well worth making a long visit. The Route de Dames, the Ossuary, the tragic Fort Douaumont where the last carrier pigeon bearing a message begging for relief was launched in vain, the bayonet trench, the forbidden Zone Rouge still full of unexploded ordnance, and so many other monuments. And for me the saddest thing - the great statue of a dying lion with the words beneath simply "To the dead".

That is indeed the reason of all this bullshit. Before the third gulf war, nobody gave three shits about France, be it her crushing defeats in 1940 or the dozens of war and hundreds of battles she won before that. But for her own selfish reasons, France refused to lick Bush Jr's ass. France refused to buy the whole "SADDAM'S GOT WMDs" bullshit. France opposed invading Irak. As a result, France had to be taught to shut the hell up. Neocon created charming websites like "fuckfrance.com", while the whole Republican establishement went on a crusade to spit on France. Ten years later, you've got clueless trolls bashing France for no reasons whenever they see that word written.

My Grandfather served with the 77th Division in WW-1 in Belgium-Holland and France. At first, he was in the Calvary because he grew up on a farm and rode horses. He was later ordered to a machine gun unit in the Trenches. He shot the Vickers gun 50 rounds at a time under orders to conserve ammo. He was Mustard gassed at the Battle of Verdun. He had a raspy cough all his life due to being gassed, but he never complained and had a successful 50-year career with a commercial baker in the U.S. post WW-1. He seldom talked about the horrors he saw.

We need a new history educational system. It is all about US history and WW1 gets nothing. WE DID NOT EVEN HAVE TO LEARN THE NAMES OF VERDUN AND THE SOMME. 2 of the most important events/battles in history and kids dont even know about it in high school. If 95% of Americans can't name these 2 battles there is no reason to wonder why we do not view war like the rest of the world. In Americas history in the North and west we have never dealt with total war and we dont learn about it at its worst at The Somme and Verdun

I am impressed and comforted to see at last this type of comment on KZbin or the Internet. Not only will Americans have more respect for allies such as France, and understand more why Russians are so painfully proud and agressive (Russia is, really, a martyrdom country), but they would learn that easy victories or even costly-yet-mandatory-victorious wars dont exist. The Americans live on a myth : the US civilians will never be at risk, and if a war happens to be costly, it will yield impressive gains of power anyway. Maybe it worked on WWII, and at that time the "return on investment" (Im sorry to talk about human deaths this way) was incredibly huge, probably it was worth it. But most wars are incredibly costly and offer no guarantee of victory. Vietnam or Iraq quagmires are the norm. Let Americans learn it and learn how to spare lives.
@Carlos-hr9kg
@Carlos-hr9kg 7 жыл бұрын
That's true, we only learned who was in the war (main countries, major leaders etc) what caused it, and only few major battles. Mostly cause in America we skim through the history books and never get to learn it in depth. It's wouldn't matter anyway cause hardly any teen in America cares about history. That's why I'm glad people like you exists to teach some of my fellow ignorant Americans the truth when they comment something stupid. I'm patriotic asf, but I'm never gonna let it interfere with truth.

@DarkKobra0202 exactly as in my textbook. Austria-Hungary needed an excuse to invade Serbia, and Franz Ferdinand's assassination was just that. He was not taking the necessary precautions in a country A-H had just annexed: Bosnia. He took a main street to drive around, did not ask his bodyguards to stand near him, and he literally waved at the people his country had just conquered. Smooth move.

Germany was bandkrupt by four years of fighting, NOT by he Versailles treaty. The economies of Germany' allies, such as Austria, have completey collapsed, the Austrian officers sold lemons on the streets. Germany's economy was faring pretty badly by the time of 1918, its final collapse was inevitable. Shouldn't the Kaiser bore some responsibilities for Germany's post war economic collapse? Why pin all the blame on the western democracies? after all, Germany paid very little. Its economy was ruined by 4 years of fighting. Even England's gold reserve was exhausted. It is war that ruins economies, NOT post-war Treaties!

@Egenoth I agree. I think the lack of "dumbing down" is the reason. Take the opening lines for example, an American documentary would have cut out words such as "citadel" and "bastion", judging them as too tricky for an American audience. It's Catch 22 because if you start shovelling "easy" TV to people they actually DO end up less eloquent and informed.

Colonel Hogg,the British military historian and artillerist opines in his book on artillery,its development and use in WWI that whereas in nearly all wars the poor bloody infantry has always complained that "they up there" do not know what they are doing,in WWI this was well and truly the case and that nobody but nobody on any side had any idea of what to do except more of the same.Comparable to the man who takes four aspirins for a headache,finds that they have a slight effect and so,the next time he is afflicted he swallows the whole bottleful and dies.

Yes thousands french fought for hitler but they fought against communist ( if you were talking about the SS charlemagne ) for Vichy it was different , Vichy protected its territories and we can't say that Vichy was a big threat to the allies because if Petain really wanted it he would have send every soldiers against the allies and the war would have been totally different.

To all those hating on the French soldiers, just one quote, from Arthur Conan Doyle when he visited the front lines in 1916 : "The French soldiers are grand. They are grand. There is no other word to express it."

Germany had one of the best armies on the planet at this time, poor choices in alliances like Austria Hungary which isolated Italy and Romania. And Ottoman Turkey, which isolated pretty much everyone as Germany was pretty much the only European power who hadn't bitten off a piece of the Ottoman Empire within the previous decades.

@TheSergentChaotix The U.S. won World War II in Europe primarily because the majority of German forces were tied up on the Eastern Front, and they were all but bereft of air power. Considering they were out-numbered and the Allies enjoyed almost total control of the air, the Germans put up one hell of a fight in Normandy and the rest of the West.

@truvianni yes, but they weren't defeated through military power, both sides were sick of war, Germany was just upset bc it didn't go as smooth as it was planned bc of Belgium holding them long enough for britains and french to support. Btw that elzas-lotharingen belt of fortresses failed xD

khakov- largest tank battle in history, 3 total battles fought there over 1 million dead kiev- 2 battles fought there and over 700,000 dead on the SOVIETS ALONE, which means total deaths is greater than 700,000 since we have to assume at least 1 german died there

IT was what churchill said , but on the ground it was completly different , 1942 as i said the first battle of El almain was a success because the frrench holded Rommel at Bir hakeim during 12 days giving time to the british to organize the defence. And yes American had some problems during the first 2 weeks because they weren't prepared , and Patton learned alot from the french general Leclerc.

What makes you think that the French would have to do what the British tell them? The French Navy had orders to scuttle the ships if the Germans ever tryed to take control or to sail them to US (not in the war) ports if they could.

Correct. Ir's a simple matter of resources, and Germany was out of it. Not to mention the naval blockade starved the home front too by 1916 already. Fritz Fischer, the German historian, claims the insanely stubborn ways of the German high command was as real in 1917 as they were in 1944. In both wars they tried to slug it out in a match that could only lead to their defeat the longer it went on. Also the amount of tanks and planes France and Britain had at their disposal by 1918...

Not to generalise, but oh, how I love watching British documentaries sometimes. No sarcasm intended. Most American ones seem to be uninformed, heavily biased, and with next to no name pronunciations done correctly. Britons, however, seem to put a lot more effort into research of both differing historical perspectives, ways of pronouncing the various names according to the language, and all in all weave it together more neatly. They're simply better in most cases.

@fp470 That's truly an EXCELLENT point and I'll consider it but I'd still like to argue that on The Western Front, with the combined forces of both France and the British Empire and Commonwealth, the outcome, even with a victorious Germany, could have still be quite different. Russia was truly vanquished; the Western Powers could have possibly negotiated a totally different kind of peace settlement but you still raised a rather superb point!

Well it's just like how most people think the entire French Army surrendered after Dunkirk, when in reality the evacuated French troops were repatriated and together with a good portion of the French Army formed a new line of defense below Paris under Weyland, and actually managed to hold the Germans for a bit.

Actually there is no record whatsoever that supports the plan of a battle based on attrition rather than a classic strategy to conquer Verun. Falkenhayns commanders denied any knowledge of such a plan. Probably he just wanted to justify his failure in his memorials, but particularly the english literature picted up the motif quite willingly.

@LeighTheGenius If you are referring to victory in the form of Marquis de La Fayette than yes he was a French General that was invaluable to Washington but he did not win the war, it was Washington that gave him command that lifted him to glory. But overall what won the war was American soldiers commitment to fight, and Britain political struggles to keep the war effort supported.

Deciding factor ? The second battle of the Marnes ended all hopes that the kaiser had , Lunderdoff has been asskicked by Foch , the 100 day campaign led by French and british broke the last german defences , the british blocage , french marching on germany through Austria , germans were over with or without US soldiers... In fact it was Clémenceau that led all the meeting at the end . Who rewrite history again ?
