Made by the Department of the Army Air Force in 1942, "Aerial Navigation - Airways Flying" shows various procedures for pilots and air traffic control. The film discusses the need for civil aviation rules, procedures and operations and an air traffic control center and tower, the meaning of green, amber, red and blue airways, recommended procedures when navigation instruments fail, and rules for approaching and leaving airports. Includes interesting footage of WWII era telefax, teletype and interphone systems as well as LINK type trainers. Portions of the film are animated and likely were produced by the Walt Disney Studios.
Cincinnati's Lunken Airport appears at the 2:39:04 mark.

2:38 Used to be called " Sunken Lunken " due to it's close proximity to the Ohio river and frequent flooding.

No, they were military secrets (almost all militaries used it) and not available for civilian aircraft until 45. So civilian airframes used visual and light guidance

Do pilots have to negotiate for curvature of the earth

Only if you're flying long haul like transatlantic, that's why they fly Great Circle routes rather than a straight line on a map. If you're navigating by eye like on most routes over land in the 40s, it wouldn't be a factor. The previous two replies were helpful weren't they.

You don’t have to, no. If you fly a constant course you are flying what’s called a “rhumb line”. In most latitudes will work fine, but it’s not the shortest course to fly. A “great circle course” is the shortest course to fly, and it will work at any latitude. We want to use great circle courses all the time because doing so saves time and fuel. The type of navigation charts used by pilots are designed such that any straight line you draw on the chart represents a great circle route. So if you follow the line in the chart you are automatically compensating for the curvature of the earth. Additionally, long range navigation equipment such as GPS automatically creates a great circle route. Great question! Retired B747 Captain - 37 years

Yes. Pilots use maps and GPS, both of which incorporate and adjust for the curve of the earth (which is ignorable on short trips)
