If you cry for anyone let it be this group of guys. I'm so intrigued by anyone of the WWII generation. They all have stories, and it's amazing how so many of them contributed to the war effort (all 4 of my grandfather's brothers in addition to himself and his in-laws served at one point as well). Take advantage of every opportunity to talk and have a good conversation or two with these old vets and the remaining centagenarians out there. They truly are the wise old elders, and we need to hear them now more than ever.

It is shameful. God spoke to us about man’s nature via the Holy Bible. From O.T. Times right up through ‘til today, man’s nature hasn’t changed a bit. Its why civilizations and great countries come and fall with time. If given the same circumstances, exactly as they were not in 1940-‘45, do I predict same or different from the men we’d draft up into mandatory military service, I just dunno. Certainly, today’s young ppl have access to much more information in zero time. So, alternating viewpoints on topics can be obtained and analyzed in no time. This giving better information with which to make decisions. So, they may possibly be wiser. Better informed(?) But, from the heart, we can readily see that many of today’s leaders are just as likely to fiddle as their country burns down, just as Nero did.

That's the part I really hate about getting older...losing this generation. I've had a life long interest in WW2 and these vets have always been around.Watching programs, films, interviews with them talking about their experiences is endlessly fascinating, emotional and very sobering. Now when I watch videos like this, the first thing I check at the end is when it was filmed and I'm wondering if these gallant men are still around now. Increasingly they are not with us anymore and it is such a loss and so heartbreaking. You read about the missions and their exploits, whatever arm of service they served in and they are there to talk to all your life... then they are gone. My dad was in the tanks in the ETO and we spent many hours talking about his experiences. Harrowing, funny and sad..one helluva cocktail of memories to be sure...and so precious to me. Dad passed at the age of 94, coming up three years ago next week. Yes,why do we watch these films and get all emotional ?... Their stories, their courage and sacrifice are forever ingrained in our hearts, thats why. " Quis Separabit"

From the Netherlands, I thank this hero for saving my country and my family. Without one of his raids my grandparents would have been shot by the Germans. Just before that specific raid the Germans captured my grandparents and a few others trying to extract information they did not have. The local underground cell blew up some telegraph poles and destroyed a railway line at several locations. The Germans were about to shoot my grandparents when American bombers were sighted heading for Berlin. My grandparents and the other captured people managed to escape while some American fighters swooped down killing the German SS soldiers involved before rejoining the bombers. I have no clue how these pilots knew about this, I never found out who flew these 3 P-51's. But thanks to them my grandparents survived the war and had my father. I know this video is now almost 6 years old, but still I wish to thank him for his actions during the war as well as his buddies.

It's so important we preserve these aircraft. They are some of the last living memories of a time when ordinary men stepped up and became extraordinary. A time when the world was in turmoil, noone knew what would happen or what the end result would be. These men faced death and destruction every day. The empty spots in the mess hall, the empty racks in the barracks, stark reminders of the day's losses, and yet, they got up the next day and did it again. Truly an amazing piece of history, and I'm so glad Lt. Goolsby got to experience this one last time. I can't even imagine the thoughts and memories that must have ran through his mind. Rest in peace, Lt. Goolsby. May your engines always run smooth, your bombs drop true, and the flak always be below you. Fly high, sir.

It's strange how two people, in the same circumstances, can have such different experiences. I knew (online) a man who was a bombardier in the 303rd BG at the end of the war. Like Mr. Goolsby, he didn't finish his 25 missions due to Germany's surrender. However, where Mr. Goolsby mentions seeing Forts being shot down, exploding and what not, and counting the parachutes of those who got out, the man I knew said he only saw two German planes his entire tour, each on a different mission. He said neither plane wanted to get anywhere near the bomber formation. That is much more in line with what I know of the history of the Luftwaffe during the war. By the last few months, they didn't have enough pilots to send very many planes up against the bombing raids. Even if they did, they had almost no fuel for them. Almost all the available planes, pilots, and fuel were sent to the Eastern Front, to try to slow down the Soviet advance. This is not to say it wasn't dangerous at that time. He had filled in for someone, on a mission, with another crew. He was therefore unavailable for HIS crew's next mission. It was on that mission their plane was hit from behind by another B-17 and went down, killing everyone aboard. R.I.P. 2nd Lt. Howard C. Lacker and crew. You are not forgotten. (Hey Billy, I'm talking about you, like I said I would!) 12:53 - I wish that jackass would have NOT interrupted and tried to finish Mr. Goolsby's sentences for him. I'm sure that, as a former B-17 pilot, Mr. Goolsby was well aware some of the German jets were 262s. However, he was ALSO trying to talk about seeing the He 162, but he couldn't get a word in.

What I think the old veteran was trying to say with the "They had 2 of them" was he saw the Me-262 with 2 jet engines and the Me-163 Komet rocket plane with 1. No doubt he knew the difference between jet and rocket propulsion then but it's been a while. If he saw the Schwalbe chances are high he saw a Komet too they both entered operations about the same time.

When he said it looked like "1 had one engine and 1 and two" I think hes referencing the 162. The 262 is the one thats more commonly talked about and noted, but there was a single engine version mounted on the top of the aircraft in the Me162. Now let me tell you why thats interesting here. The 162 was only flown in combat for about less than 1 month in April of 1945. Assuming he remembered correctly, and lord i believe he has given how thats something you dont forget, he was one of very few individuals to ever see one of those 162 operated in combat.

My grandfather was a navigator on a Lancaster patrolling the Middle East. I'm not sure he was permanently based anywhere, seemed to float between bases. I've got pictures of him in Jerusalem, Malta, Cyprus, Syria. I think he may have been up to more than he would admit...

always had the greatest respect for the bomber crews and have always loved the B-17,I remember when these planes were still flying after the war ended, used to playing one that is now being restored in Illinois when it was in a junkyard in Maine

I was driving through the Sierra Nevada mountains and there was a large fire that was being fought. I pulled over for gasoline when I heard that sound...a sound like no other...and coming low over a rise was a 17 that had been fitted for water-drop. Man, I just burst into tears.

Thank God for the young men and women that took the initiative to sign up and fight for our freedom. These pilots gunners and crew for flying into overwhelming odds against them and bombed factories making weapons of terror. God bless them and the families that waited for them stateside.
