In the late 1930s before the outbreak of World War II, under the strong request of Mussolini, Italy began to develop a heavy tank-the p26/40 tank. Italian officials call it "Carro Armato P 26/40", "Carro Armato" means armored tank, P refers to "heavy (Pesante)" in Italian, 26 and 40 are "weight (ton) ” and the “year (1940)” of the design’s adoption.
Although the design was completed in 1940, the first prototype was not built until 1942. The Army ordered a total of 500 tanks of this type, but only 21 were completed before the surrender of Italy in 1943. The rest continued to be produced after being occupied by the German army, and a total of 100 were produced before Germany was defeated.
