Captain Jerry Yellin (whose story is told in the new book THE LAST FIGHTER PILOT) was a P-51 fighter pilot stationed in Iwo Jima during World War II. He and his 19-year-old wingman Philip Schlamberg flew the very last combat mission of the war, on the day Japan surrendered. Here, he opens up about his war memories and tells an incredible story about his family's encounter with a Japanese Kamikaze pilot.

My father flew Corsairs from the Antietam during Ww2, my memories of him are horrible, the man in this video, seemed stable and dedicated, was probably a great Dad, and obviously a great pilot, a true role model.

I live next door to a man who was in the navy during WWII. He was on the island where the Enola Gay refueled before dropping the atomic bomb on Nagasaki. I also knew a man who was attacked with mustard gas in WWI. I feel honored to have known both of them.

Truly an incredible inspiration. I've read about the true greats of WWII aviation. Jimmy Doolittle, Pappy Boyington, Chuck Yeager, etc. I think I need to add Jerry Yellin to that list and read about his incredible story.

My father flew in B-24's in the South Pacific during WWII. He was shot down on his 28th mission. Crash landed in Borneo and walled out of the jungle into a Japanese patrol, the only crewman of 10 to survive. Spent the last 1.5 years in a Concentration camp in Japan. Very high mortality rate!

Still fit...slim...articulate....the sort of man you would want on YOUR team........great that we had men like him around at the time when they were needed, I'm an 81 yr old brit - living in NZ & totally understand why these guys never spoke about the war until they were old men.............reason - no-one would be able to understand / believe what they went thru at that time , glad his wife peruaded him to go back....it helped to put his life back on an even keel after all those years .........Brian Mullin

My father was a DC-3 Pilot/Flight Engineer, flying 100's of missions in the Pacific Theater during WWII. Though 50 was supposed to be the limit ! His plane and crew were shot down 3x, in jungles and survived all 3.

Oh my god...and the things in this country today we view as 'problems'. Knowing as many veterans as I do today the last thing they ever want to hear is "thank you for your service". A thank you from me is meaningless and I understand why but what I will offer is a statement that requires no polite response from a veteran who gave everything and went through hell processing the horror of war when they returned home or those that never had that opportunity....

My father was at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. He never spoke about WW2 or Korea. Somewhere, I have his written statement about the sinking of one of his ships during the Korean War. I remember that day and he never spoke about it.

I know a Marine who served in the battle of Iwo Jima in WW2. Deep respect for him and all the others who bravely fought for our freedoms. I'm afraid today we'd not be able to muster enough men and women to do what this Greatest Generation had to do.
