In France, the Army Transportation Corps created a huge trucking operation called the 'Red Ball Express' to supply General George Patton's troops. Most of its drivers were black. On an average day, 900 fully-loaded vehicles were on the Red Ball route, around the clock.

My Uncle Garland Hamlin was a member of the Red Ball Express. He returned home, finished college at NC A&T and then became an engineer at IBM and worked on early robotics projects.

My dad was an ambulance driver with a MASH unit attached to the 10 Mtn. During the battle of the bulge, they needed every available driver to drive supply trucks, they said, "You can drive an ambulance, you can drive a deuce & a half." Just like that, he was running supplies, but he was also a trained medic. They put guys where they needed them. He was on guard duty one night and shot a sniper. He brought home the rank and buttons from the enemy uniform, and some Nazi money. He used to keep that stuff in a metal box, I guess to hide the memories of the war, but have them there to look at just in case.

I actually have a helmet from Normandy that once belonged to a Coast Guardsman and was reissued to the Red Ball Express. The helmet was painted green over the black, has a red U in the center (Don't know what it means) and the liner has a red disk in the middle.

A bit late, sorry for that. No misunderstanding here. It was also my point. But again: driving the red ball express, maight be considered as much as a fight as well. Without the proper logistics, a war is lost before is has begun. Again all respect.

I'm sorry if I say something, which maight be insulting: It's not the case: Afro Amerikans, were not to be " in Arms ", were not the people in fighting arms. Afro Amerikans, who have made the increddible logistics possible ... there would be no victory in Europe ... without these increddible men who shifted an impossible load, to make our freedom. I'm greatful for their effort ... an untold story. Thank You for Your effort, all the people involved in the Red Ball-Express

Thank you for this. My step-father (who is still alive) states that he (as a British infantryman) was "conscripted" to work with the Red Balls, anyone know more about this please?

Let Go of the steering wheel, and let Jesus drive you to Heaven! Jesus is Jehovah God! His sinless, pure, holy, powerful red blood, can wash away your guilt, judgement, and sin of unbelief! (Unbelief,) will lead you to an (eternal) Hell! Just ask the "Red Ball Express!"
