My opa was in the Wehrmacht. He’s still alive today and is 93. He was a teenager in the army. He told me some dark stuff about his city Hamburg when it was firebombed to hell by the British and Americans. He told me it was so hot the streets melted and people tried to run but got stuck in the melted asphalt and melted into the street screaming. Anyways have a nice day it you read this.

After all of the attention of the Blitze Krieg and the success of their offense even more stunning was their defense . They also had genius in their defense most of which was kept from Hitler so he could not also ruin that also with “no retreat “ orders . The way they practiced “Covering Withdrawal “ and the use of snipers in that manner is still studied in the war colleges . The Gothic line and Monte Cassino co-ordinated with the best use of terrain in defense ever, Kesselring was a true defensive genius . The Germans made us pay for almost every foot we gained on them . The use of snipers was paramount in this type of covered withdrawal 3 to 4 snipers were able to block an entire army’s advance through terrain that favored the defense big time

Lol, they didnt listen to the treaty after hitler took over a decade and a half before the war. They had a great army because THEY'D. ALWAYS HAD ONE, it was a tradition for generations mostly thanks to Prussia. They were just as good in the first world war tbh, the second world war was them learning from mistakes and having a better understanding of how modern warfare worked.

Good catch. I'm pretty sure I would die for a war I believed in , but even I as a man can't ever know what it's like to be fired at , fire at other humans, and look someone in the eyes when they die. There's a reason why they dehumanize the enemy in propaganda for the men. I can only imagine how scared that guy was. I'm told you can't even understand war unless you've been in it. Honestly it's kinda crazy when you think about it.... you have one life to live and you lose it instantly for a cause you don't even really know anything baout, and then that's it, you're dead. For millions of 18 year olds that was their fate.

The narrator, Roy Ward, is effective. A voice like a professor's and a handle on enunciation and pronunciation. "Danke" Roy. . . . . At 45:10, is that a female SS? I went back to study at freezeframe setting before posting this and inquiring of you fellow KZbinrs for input and assistance. Rather amazing that this documentary was assembled and completed way back in 2000; i.e., 20 years ago. As viewers we're indeed fortunate the film elements -- filmed under the most dangerous of circumstances -- survived the subsequent decades and were of broadcast quality so as to enlighten us. It's amazing reading so many complaining comments that sound like "World War II: The Wehrmacht" documentary was just recently produced and the writer(s) and editor(s) are just a text or phone call away to regroup and re-configure to the respondents' specifications. Finally, an estimated one fourth of the 400 Comments could be eliminated/deleted if those whining about the (unexplainable, unnecessary, boring) three-minute "intro" had bothered to read a dozen or so comments they'd see that point had already been addressed ad nauseam = NUMEROUS times -- SO, simply "upvote" the existing remark. Then reflect upon something original and specific within the remaining 51 minutes about which to comment that 1) impressed you, or 2) depressed you, or 3) enlightened/informed you, or 4) infuriated you. And if those options don't work, or you're not adept, simply muzzle your keyboard. So you don't bore us -- like the notorious three-minute intro.

Germany was a great world military power but lost war because of rapid expansion to conquer fronts and aquire new territory.That gave strain due to exhaustion of personell and low supply of equipment and hardware. This is a very educative documentary in history of war.

Y'all should read "the rise and fall of the great powers" it expresses the theory that whatever nation starts a war if not successful in a short amount of time will always fight against economic power or loss of said power thereby losing the war in the end. Watch these docs with that in mind and you'll notice that, that is the biggest reason for the German loss in both world wars and Japan's loss in ww2. After a time they just couldn't replace the losses in men and equipment.

Something else that made the Wehrmacht so efficient was a streamlined command structure. In the US, anything the president tried to do had to go through Congress, or the Parliament in the UK, while Hitler was able to rule directly and absolutely. We also had commanders from the US, UK, USSR and France in the Allied general staff. There was constant rivalry between DeGaulle, Patton, Montgomery, et al. The Allied High Command was grossly inefficient compared to Germany at that time. What also helped Germany was the centuries-old Prussian military aristocracy. The Prussians were practically a race unto themselves, a race of soldiers. Couple that with a streamlined command structure and government, along with businesses and industries dedicated solely to the science of war and you've got one hell of a war machine.

In high school a lot of my friends had mausers. They were 20 bucks each. Most had dings and gouges in the wooden stocks. My uncles sent them back to the US from the war. After a battle they were laying all over the place. I was in high school in the late 1960s. We didn't think much of them because they were so beat up.

Formidable fighting machine. The only way to defeat them was to have a significant numerical advantage in both men and equipment. Consider what it did take to defeat them. It took both post war superpowers the Soviet Union and the US. And the then superpower British Empire. And it still took years to grind them down. No one could have beaten them alone.

The narration was poorly written. The Wehrmacht is NOT the Army, the Wehrmacht is the Heer (Army), Luftwaffe (Air Force) and Kreismarine (Navy) combined - yet this is titled The Wehrmacht but only focuses on the Heer (Army). The narration switches between Wehrmacht and Army as if they were the same thing. The information within this documnetary is interesting though and if you can get past the ignorance then you will enjoy what it has to offer.

The ultimate element of superiority came from Allied air power. Comparing air to land forces is like comparing speech to writing. Speech expresses a wide range of information so much more quickly. Germany, like Japan, was doomed from the start.
@dennisweidner288

Edward, There are many cases in which smaller countries with limited resources have defeated larger, more powerful adversaries. I agree that the odds were against the Axis, but 'doomed from the start' is a very different matter. Any country that can get to Paris in a month and Moscow in only 4 months can not be considered doomed. And unlike the Western Allies, Stalin had been building up a huge, much larger army with modern weapons for years. Don't forget, the Allied air power you speak of did not exist in 1941 t at the time that the Germans were at the gates of Moscow.

Very true. Germany had the planes but lacked the oil to put them into the air. Plus, they had too many designs which made it extremely difficult getting parts when they needed repairs. Many other reasons as well. Plus, Germany was running very low on oil by 1943.
@dennisweidner288
@dennisweidner288 3 жыл бұрын
@@KarlMarxFanClub Absolutely correct, oil was more of a problem than planes, although as early as the Battle of Britain the Germans were being outproduced. And once the American Arsenal of Democracy was in gear, they were hopelessly outproduced. In addition, by 1943 the Soviets were back producing aircraft (thanks in part to Lend Lease aluminum). I don't think too many designs were a major problem. (It was for motor vehicles.) There were a lot of failed projects at the development stage. But as for their major production line aircraft, there was a relatively small number. After all, they used Me-109 throughout the War and the FW-190 from 1942. The primary problem in the last 2 years of the War was pilots. (The same problem the British faced in 1940.) Training pilot requires lots of aviation fuel. And the Germans did not have the oil as you point out for operations--let alone training. Keeping their best pilots flying (instead of involved in training) until they were shot down was another problem.
