I know WHY Germany invaded. I must correct myself. I know all the arguments after being a keen and independent minded historian for 40 years. But it still makes so little sense to do what Germany did, twice, in the modern era, as 1914 and 1939 were in a modern era. Not Napoleonic era or earlier. No good comes of occupation of neighbours like that. Pointless murder.

my grandfather saved dutch officer and his family from japanese army because in that time imperial japanese army were vicious against european especially dutch . if they found dutch people they will send them to makeshift concentration camp in city like Solo, and Semarang. the japanese army or dai nipong as indonesia will force the male dutch to work, use the female dutch as sex slave. my grandfather hid the dutch family inside his secret vault originaly used to kept gold. the nipong came and asked my grandfather nipong: ada belanda disini (do you hide dutch people in here) my grandfather: tidak ada tuan sumpah ( i swear to god i hide no dutch in here) the japanese soldier search my grandfather house for an hour luckily they missed the vault. the family was saved but my grandfather was badly wounded as the nipong beat his head with their rifle because the japanese soldier my grandfather lied to them

Even though the weapons were either ancient or badly made, the men who used them to defend their country were brave and strong men that fought till the very end. It's a shame that the government of the Netherlands has always held back the Dutch military so very much. Almost as if they did not care about the military at all. Even now other countries have to wake the Dutch government up to rebuild their army instead of them doing it themselves. Very loyal and good, strong, brave men who gave it and still give it all, though led by a pathetic government that doesn't give a wooden nickle about them.

I'm comming a year late here but you have to understand that there was an enormous economic crisis going on, and the prime minister at the time (Colijn and later on de geer) had a rather thrifty mindset (save for geer maybe) Nowadays there is not much reason to invest to the military in the Netherlands due to mostly peaceful bonds in Western Europe and also it's location, should an outside invasion be comming: the invader would first have to fight it's way through half of Europe before reaching dutch grounds. Although I do think that the NATO requirement of atleast 2% should be met.

The ''problem'' with the Dutch is that they are the biggest of the small European countries (so they could decide to have a small defence force, or surrender quickly without losing honour or losing too many human lives) but they are the smallest of the big countries (meaning that they have to have some decent-sized army of their own). The industrial capability was certainly there, but... there was too much reliance on foreign armament, and foreign assistance in case of an invasion. I know the depression in the 1930s hit everybody hard but the government just didn't want to spend too much money. and it hoped the same would happen as in WW1 - no German invasion at all.

In 1940 they made the right decision. The cities were at the mercy of the German air force. The German army had bypassed the Maginot line and the French country side was wide open. The USSR was Germany's alley and the USA was neutral. The decision to make both the navy and merchant navy available to the alleys was the correct one. They gave up territory but didn't give up the struggle.

Just after ww1 the Netherlands actually had one of the worlds strongest airforces due to german and allied planes from war defectors landing on dutch soil. They never returned these planes and actually gave the country from wich the planes origined a fine because they technically broke war rules by flying over neutral soil with an armed jet. I dont kniw the exact numbers but we ended up with a LOT of ww1 planes.

Great video. It's a shame the Netherlands government didn't invest more in defence during the 1930s. By spending more money they could have equipped their forces a lot better - an excellent technological/industrial base and a comparatively rich and well educated populace.

It would have been of no use. There is a relative long Dutch-German border. In a perfectly straight line, from the north to the south, it is about 300 km, the most distant point from the border is less than 200 km. Total land area is less than 35,000 km. The Germans were far better armed, equipped, trained etc. than the Dutch in almost any field. But it's true that certainly not the best German units were used in the attack. In order to successfully defend themselves against an invasion, the national defense budget should have been like that of present-day North Korea. Anyhow it was always thought that the British and the French would assist in the event of an invasion. But in may 1940 there was little or no coorporation at all... At a couple of places the Dutch defence was excellent however. A lot of transport airplanes were shot down. Those could have been used in the case of an invasion of Britain. Hitler was furious when he found out that a lot of German paratroopers were taken prisoner and brought to England.
@buttslane4491
@buttslane4491 8 жыл бұрын
I take your point about the Dutch having no strategic depth available and on reflection it was quite probably the deciding weakness. Only having recently taken an interest in Dutch armed forces I was surprised at how outdated much Dutch kit was - corps artillery dating from roughly the 1880s (no recoil systems) and motor lorries that were obviously of 1918-20 design were just two examples I've seen on videos here. I can't help thinking that just some corrections to obvious training and equipment deficiencies might have made the German command decide not to invade, as the costs could have outweighed the benefits. But as you say, there was little or no coordination with French/UK forces - a hard lesson that led to the NATO integrated command structure post-war. But anyway, this is all "what if'" and what actually happened did happen. Very sadly.

The rifles and carabines were an adaptation of the Austro-Hungarian standard issue during WW1, which were the best infantry weapons of their day. Straight bolt action five cartridge block loaders, with automatic eject form the bottom when spent, with an effective range of 2500 meters. Not bad at all and lethal in the hands of a man who knew how to use it. And Dutch soldiers have always been good riflemen, sharphooters and snipers, so they inflicted a lot of German casualties with these weapons during May 1940.

The germans bombed Rotterdam to make us give up because it took them too long. They expected to run over us but that did not happen. During the surrender they only had conquered half or less of our small country. We destroyed many of their planes. Yes we had old equipment but knew how to use it because we ttrained with them for many years. My grandfather was at the Motordienst Auto Batt 2, stationed in the city of Haarlem. if im corect dutch army have their own military revolver that chambered in 9.2mm the gun was pretty common in indonesia as it was produced in surabaya and use to equip security guard and local cop. its designed was based on typical european revolver like rast gasser and bodeo revolver. the military officer never carry this revolver as they prefer to use more advanced firearms like luger in 7.65 parabellum, fn 1922 in 380 acp, colt 1903 pocket hammerless and various .32acp and 380 acp automatic pistol

Some of the newer type vehicles (DAF M39) were barely used and there were very limited numbers. About the planes. Koolhoven FK 58 was never used by the Dutch. The Fokker DXXIII was far from operational as was the bomber Fokker T-IX. De Schelde S-21 was build and far from ready when the war broke out. The plane that was the spine of Dutch Airforce, the Fokker DXXI, is not even mentioned in this video. Bit of bad research.

The Dutch had some good weapons, like the DAF M39, the fighterplanes, and a very good anti aircraft force, which shot down huge amounts of German planes. German paratrooper droppings and attacks were for a big part a disaster for the Germans. Also on the Afsluitdijk, at Kornwerderzand, the Germans did not get through. The better weapons were too little in numbers, and too late purchased.
@ArmyVehicleClub
@ArmyVehicleClub 7 жыл бұрын
At the reviews of the Dutch weapons you menton each time "HEMBURG" - As you repeat this it can't be a 'wrong key' - it should be "HEMBRUG"! The so called "WIjman" 'armoured' car is in fact a PWV Morris 135, modified by J. Wijnman. Not 12 but only 3 were made. These cars belonged to the 'Buffle Class' and received the names: Buffel, Bison and Wisent. They were useless in wartime. INstead of the type of 'armoured cars' the Dutch Army bought the Swedish "Gammele Lansverk", or short: "Lanswerk". Of this type of armoured car the Dutch bought 12 cars. We are really puzzled about your GMC armoured car as it was according to you in service of the Dutch army... You forgot to mention the Carden Loyd Carrier, made by Vickers UK, the first tracked armoured car for the Dutch army, furthermore the 'Bussing', PAW 36 and 38, and as PAW 39 it was in fact the DAF M39 AC
@LeanderJobse
@LeanderJobse 6 жыл бұрын
I can give you some good info on the GMC's if you want. The carden loyd was not the first tracked vehicle of the Dutch, one Renault FT was. And then we still have the good old little Ehrhardt armored car.

Very intrigued by the De Schalde S.21 as it was slightly heavier and with a slightly smaller wing than the contemporary BF109.E3 but was significantly faster (24 MPH faster than the 109 and 10 Mph faster than the Spitfire Mk2) was very similarly armed and the service ceiling difference was negligible. With these figures it looks like the 109 would be more manoeuvrable but the S.21 would be faster not only in level flight but also in a dive which indicates that it may have better energy retention in a Boom and Zoom attack it would certainly have been an interesting match-up between the two and would have many parallels to that of the 109 with the spitfire albeit with the 109 being forced to use tactics more similar to the ones the spitfire took in such engagements. And with the S.21 using essentially the same engine ( a few minor modifications as the S.21 used the DB600G that was used on prototype 109s while the production 109 used the DB601) as the 109 both would have been able to do negative G manoeuvres. I honestly think in the hands of a skilled pilot the S.21 would have been an excellent fighter albeit the high wing loading would have negatively effected manoeuvrability but had have improved stability making it a very effective Boom and Zoom fighter its a pity it never got the chance such an interesting design deserved, and that's not even mentioning the far superior viability the pilot would have had in the S.21

The Dutch hated the Germans what they did in WW2 to their own country, but forgot what the Dutch did in the hundred years in the past in the territory that Dutch called 'eastern indie' even in the next years later after WW2. The Dutch admire Canadian what they did to their own country but not learn as a role model, but the colonial attitude was in them even before the Germans did. Deep condolences to the women, children, and civilians who have become victims for the colonialism itself from wherever the country even in Germany though
