One of the things I find interesting about ww1 (and the us civil war) was that so many of the depictions were paintings while some were actual images. Ww1 seemed to be the last major war where a lot of the depictions were with paintings and it’s so interesting to see how revolutionary the ww1 was.

0:24, 9th of september 1914 is as close as they ever got to winning the war. crazy how the war dragged on for 4 years for basically no reason for the germans on the western front. sure they ended up winning on the east but its so insane how little it changed in the west throughout the whole war

Very good representation Also a curiosity here: The plan to attack Verdun (Operation Gericht) was only meant to threaten the city to concentrate French forces in the area. Then, from the high ground, the Germans would inflict many casualties by using artillery. This would cause elevated casualties from the French, with relatively little casualties from the Germans. However the generals in charge of the troops decided to try and take the city instead.

It's always amazing to see how the Entente's victory was decided in the very few last months. I mean, it was certainly a clear victory, since if an armistice hadn't been signed, French, English and American troops would have arrived up to Berlin anyway, 4 months or two years later.

@@dani-ct2vf I disagree, trench war favors the defender significantly. Besides, it would be a complete nightmare to fight Germans on German territory like we would see during ww2. It would also be a logistical nightmare with transportation and supplies, so much so that the extra troops and supplies they had would not make a difference.

Tanks, Infantry, trucks and artillery and aircraft had never been more closely integrated by that time. The French Army was the most modern army in 1918, with trucks transporting tens of thousands of their men and hundreds of tanks in support. Meanwhile the Germans are stuck to using trains or their feet to get from point A to point B. Their precious Hindenburg line was broken in a few weeks. Any serious defence would probably have to be in the Rhine, that will take weeks to set up. And who knows if the German Army would still be reasonably intact by that point.
