World Youth Day: Hearing God’s Whisper

Friends, World Youth Day is one of Pope John Paul II’s greatest gifts to the Catholic Church, and it was a joy to attend World Youth Day 2023 in Lisbon. Over the span of just a few days, I was privileged to speak at five events. This World Youth Day was truly a memorable experience.

It touched my heart to hear the man say "I want to be a saint," then to hear the Bishop say, "The Great saints had worldly responsibilities." It felt like a message to me, as I often feel like I am divided between my spiritual time and the pressures of my life. But I guess there was never a saint who didn't also have worldly problems and duties.

I remember Bishop Barron talking about spending five minutes with someone and you will learn what is important to them. I did some self reflecting on that and asked myself what was important to me. My number one answer was, “freedom”. Today, just now, listening to this video, to hear the words of Pope John Paul II, saying to do as Christ says and you will be free, resonated so strongly with me because, maybe for the first time, I got it. I am reminded of so many snippets from these wonderful videos from Word on Fire and Bishop Barron where I have been told that God is Love. I have tweaked that a little and say, “not only is God Love but, God wants you happy”. In sin, we definitely can hurt others but we hurt ourselves too. We move away from God’s Love, God’s Light. Jesus tells us so clearly how to remain in the light. “It’s for freedom that Christ has set you free”. I don’t know about the rest of you but, “whoa!”. Major moment for this lapsed Catholic who is struggling to work his way back into the Light. I needed that, Bishop. I needed that almost desperately. Thank you and God Bless You.

Thank you for sharing this beautiful story. I got to participate in1993 when St John Paul II visited Denver. My 67 year mom and I, plus my 16 and 15 year old sons all walked to see St John Paul. My mother was always a devout Catholic and noting would have kept her away. Watching this still makes me cry.

It absolutely does. All too often, we hear about young people who are heading towards the wrong path in life. Not these young people, and so many of them!!!! What a joy filled pilgrimage it must have been thank you for sharing these highlights from WYD2023, I'm 49 years old and no longer a youth, but can recall how a pilgrimage/retreat I attended in 1989 with other youth truly helped plant seeds of faith for me. It must be so wonderful to be close to Fatima. I was just the other day saying that in the US we have never gotten a visit from the Blessed Mother (i was studying the miracle hunter's work). She goes everywhere else but never in the US (except for that one in the Midwest a hundred years ago when she asked a girl to start a bible study but it was so long ago) I would like the visit to be a happy event for Her and us and not a chastisement but either way i would love to be close to the land where she came. Personally i would live to see her if she ever came here. (I will never be able to afford to go to Fatima, La Sallette, Rome , Good Success, Guadalupe, or Lourdes so i wish she could come to a place close by)

She hasn't come to England since her appearance in the 13th century to St Simon Stock. Our major Shrines are at Walsingham, Norfolk, where she appeared in 1061, and Aylesford, Kent scene of the aforementioned apparition to St Simon Stock. Still we call England Our Lady's Dowry. Both Aylesford and Walsingham were destroyed and the pilgrimages suppressed at the Reformation and rebuilt in the 20th century. I have visited both many times.

Is Western society truly spiritually hungry? How? In need of something? What? Most it seems are not searching, not asking what it’s all about, not opening their eyes or looking upward, but very content and settled in a strong secular atheistic view and life practice. The ground is truly dry and the daunting work of evangelism is a heavy but necessary task for us all.
