(edited) Lyrics with English translation (may be a bit off): Utru oras ta meste pega tras di sel : Sometimes I want to go after the sun Ma tras di sel, n ka kunsidu : But in the way of the sun, I'm not known Utru oras ta meste pega tras di sel : Sometimes I want to go after the sun Ma tras di sel, n ka kunsidu : But in the way of the sun, I'm not known Ka no seta e ngana nos : Make no mistake (or lets not fool ourselves) Lua oi di nos : The moon, this is ours Lua oi pa nos : Oh moon, the moon is ours Dia ki mangi na kontra ku pisilon : N ka meste matchil : [???] : Luto di ronda di mar ka tchiga : kuspi na mon : Bu ta modja na son : umadja sugu : [at this point the language switches from bissau creole to senegalese wolof..not clear what's being said] [???] Banta loum yaga chi gageki (?) : du supalayko jasit : Lua [???] : (apparently amounts to something like: the law is for us, all strength has a beginning, every beginning is a strength, even if a stick stays in the river for a long time, it will never become a crocodile.) the law is for us [chorus at the end] Kada forsa ku si kumsada : Every force has its beginning Kada forsa : Every force background pulled from various sorces (a comment below; reddit /u/sacundim; web article on PAM): This is a cover of José Carlos Schwarz' 1972, "Lua kata kema" ("The moon doesn't burn"), originally sung in Bissau creole. Baobab add some extra lyrics, but on the whole it seems like they're singing about wanting to visit the moon, because it belongs to them and doesn't burn. It's about Guinea-Bissau's 1960-1974 war of independence from Portugal. "The sun" stands for the Portuguese, "the moon" for the independence guerillas. The guerillas often spoke of the “moon” as their allies while comparing the enemies (Portuguese colonists) to the sun that they had to avoid in order to move forward (often during the night) without being detected, and guided by the moon's light. Jose Carlos was a politically active poet and musician who served in the military as an independence fighter in the early 70s. He sang about the independence revolution, as in “Na Kolonia,” representing the cry of an artist in exile thinking about the fate of his friends back home. Eventually he was imprisoned and tortured for two years by the International Police and Defense of the Portuguese State. His country gained independence soon after his release in 74. He remained active during the early days of state building, often denouncing the new rulers whom he considers traitors to the independence ideals. He died suddenly in a plane crash at age 27. The language in the Baobab song is Guinea-Bissau Creole, whose vocab is mostly drawn from Portuguese. Guinea-Bissau Creole is mostly spoken in Guinea-Bissau, but Portuguese and Cape Verdeans have long settled in Senegal's Casamance region so the language has been spoken for centuries by a community there as well. A couple of Baobab's singers are from this community, most notably lead singer Rudy Gomis (his last name is a variant of the Portuguese name Gomes or Spanish Gómez).

Qu’en Reste-t-il, à présent ? Tiens Bon, encore, Charlie !
