This game drained my parents of quarters when I was a kid. I never could beat it though. This, Heavy Barrel, and Ikari Warriors always gave me hell at the arcade. Lol Kids today will never know the joy of 80's arcade games.

I feel like the definitive experience of this genre was Caliber Fifty, although I played all the others you said, and I liked them all, especially Time Warriors because of the very interesting concept. Caliber Fifty was the most fun of them all to play.

when I played this game at my local arcade in the 80s, the music was turned up on the cabinet, all you heard was constant explosions since every common enemy makes this noise when they are killed. The voices in some of the bosses really made this game cool and innovative back in the day. The Age of Rome was my favorite track in the entire game. It was one of the few arcade games you could beat with 50 cents if you and a friend cooperated and played the game methodically. Alpha Denshi went on to design games for the Neo Geo AES... the explosion of the bosses as they are killed were used in Ninja Combat.

I though that sound familiar when the bos dies. it seems to die the same way too

Time Soldiers ran on the Alpha-68k hardware. While this may not seem important, Alpha Denshi and SNK refined the hardware to what is now known as the Neo Geo MVS.

I actually owned the arcade machine of this for about 15 years, bought it off a guy on ebay for less than $200. I loved it with the rotary joystick controller, but never did beat it. On the last level, you can not continue, so if you lose the lives you have, it's game over. That was frustrating, but made it worth owning the game, since most arcade games from that era, you just could keep hitting continue to beat the game, so it was cool they put that feature in. Wish I would have seen how this guy beat the game before i sold the machine, maybe then i could have beaten it myself! Oh well.

Shinobi in the arcade did this as well. Did not matter if you had a relatively clean run up to the last stage. You could be on your last life and if you died, you could not continue. Raiden in the arcade had something similar on I assume the last stage. You could continue, but you were sent back to a check point after each death, did not happen in the game up until that point. Never beat either of those games.

Glad to see another SMS aficionado! I don't seem to see a whole lot of people who even KNOW about the Sega Master System! My all-time favorite game for any console is "Spellcaster" for the SMS. My brothers and I spent about 2 years beating that game, mostly because of how hard it is to navigate the pyramid maze with almost every room looking exactly the same. Plus, we didn't even have the internet to help us with such an obscure game for such an obscure console. Anyone have any other SMS games they liked?

As a huge SNK fan how have I never played this?!??! Did anyone else notice btw that the boss music is almost the same as doom E1M1's opening looped? I loved these arcade games that utilized a rotary joystick. Heavy Barrel was another favorite. I remember being pretty good at the game, but never making it to the end on a quarter or two. One day I had a pocket full of quarters and decided, "Today I'm beating this game!" I made it to the last battle after a few coins, died, went to continue and found out that you couldn't continue in the last world. I was ready to shove over the cabinet lol. Eventually I did beat the game on only a couple of continues. Yet I'll likely never forget the rage I felt the day I found out you couldn't continue in the last level. But this playthrough... OMG, just the the powerups already! It's like watching someone play Super Mario Bros, get the fire flower, but too afraid to ever use it lol
