This game just had so much mystery and interest to it. I found this game at a pawn shop around the mid to late 90s. The cream colored cover and shield instantly caught my attention, I felt like if I found a treasure. And no doubt I realized I did as soon as I started playing it. Till this day it is the best NES game I have ever played.

I had a running deal with my cousins that I could buy used NES games from them for 20$, and I think this was one of them. For a 6 or 7 year old kid this game was so large and complex, I never had a strategy guide or Nintendo Power issue to go along with it.

Fun Fact: if you spend every single gold piece in the starting town, you can go back to the King of Elves and not only will he talk to you as if it's your first time doing so, but he'll also give you another 1500 Gold Pieces (I have no idea if this was intentionally left in the game, it was a bug that no one found out about or what, but it always amuses me every time I play this game.) While newcomers might find it a bit difficult to fully understand how the feel of the gameplay is, once you do understand and master it, it's easily one of the best NES games you'll ever play!

so many hidden secrets you miss. simplest one: instead of paying doctor 2500 golds, the me as t/bread guy charges 200. you b uy from him 3X and magic and life are redtored. Instead of buying full plate armor, if you go into the coffee shop/lounge, one of the patrons GIVES you full plate. and the biggest. most extremely helpful hint is right in the beginning of the game, the king gives you 1500 golds. if you leave and go right back in, over n over n over he keeps giving you 1500 golds. so all the repetitive grinding you do for your magic shield can be avoided AND you can buy death spell. Worth it, if you are going to kill same enemies over and over. try it next time. we'll worth it if you are going to build gold. lastly the black onyx actually makes your hits much much WEAKER!! lessons of years of playing this addicting/irritating master piece. TY - Russ

another way of cheating? no thanks kid..... i'd rather honor this game by fighting it on it's own turf. and that's "no cheating"

black onyx decrease damage only with the first 3 armor. black onyx + battle armor = Decreases damage recieved by way over 50%. The king only give you 1500 gold if you're out of gold, the trick is to go see the king get the gold buy your stuff then die while keeping your stuff. Repeat the process as needed.

In the room 13:40 you can get the mattoc for free, if you kill all the enemys, but it has to be in the right fourth screen. Meaning that if you kill all enemys and it dont shows up, go back a screen and back and kill all again. Within 4 times it will show up. There are lots of "free item screens" in the game. It is especially good when you find wingboots wich is expensive. There are also Oiniment and to be found.
