Based on all the evidence, I don't think Baelor was one of the "crazy" Targaryens. At least not at first. I think his father likely played a big role in his pacifist nature, which probably led to his turn to religion. But, he definitely went off the deep end after the viper pit. All that venom combined with the intense physical strain likely caused mental damage.

very true i think should we ever get fire and blood part two how he becomes such a religulous motivated person might be cleared up. At heart unlike a lot of 'bad' kings, i believe Baleor's intentions were good, but that does not mean the actions they resulted in were good.

I think Baelor was definitely mad but had the drive and temperament to make some positive choices in his early reign. Without him Dorne may have remained an enemy, and Daeron II naming his heir after him shows his legacy isn’t completely unappreciated.

In my opinion, Baelor is one of the worst kings alongside the Mad King and and Aenys. Guy really burnt very much needed books and knowledge that characters in the main series may need. Bro held the Targaryens back no wonder the faith and maesters loved this dude, he was doing their job for them. At least he built the great sept so the faith is now in Kings Landing allowing the Hightowers to have some grand re-awakening

It's a good thing he died when he did, in my opinion. Eventually he would have provoked the North in some manner, as the last bastion of the Old Gods, and it would have led to war. The Starks and their bannermen (aside from the Manderlys) hold to the Old Gods with firm fervour and to try and forcibly convert them would be disastrous.

I'm glad you enjoy them. To be honest i've been doing it so long now i've really narrowed down the workflow a lot. But what i will say is ever since i got past the era fire and blood covers it has been much more challenging having to use the world book as the main source, it's great to have but lacks the detail fire and blood gives us. For example Aegon iii's Regency took like 50 videos to cover. His actual reign maybe 4. So fleshing out the content post fire and blood has been tricky and taken a lot more work in terms of scripting that it used to.

Baelor’s a strange case. Does his Good outweigh the Bad? Set aside his follies like the messenger doves & the touting of low-class faith healers & prophets. Major edicts occurred during his rule. Among them, appeasement of Dorne ultimately led to Its annexation into the kingdom proper; fully & not in style only. One of the greatest achievements of any Targaryen king imo. His charity to the smallfolk & patronage to the Faith of Seven were remarkable endeavors imo. Detaining his innocent sisters for a decade was an outrage. Burning books & oppressing secular intellectuals & intelligencia, was substantive & harmful. A bloody crusade against the Northmen & Ironmen would’ve been an existential disaster. There’s no certain verdict in either direction
@WorldOfWesteros

For me Baelor had good intentions, he certainly didn't want to harm anyone or make the kingdom a worse place and he did do some really good things, peace with Dorne being one of them. i genuinely believe he felt like he was doing the right things. But just because he was doing them with good intent does not make his actions good. He's not evil or a tyrant, like Maegor or Aegon iv, but ultimately he is remembered among the bad kings of westeros.

I don't think he would have led a bloody crusade against the Northmen. This just seems to be slander in the World of Ice and Fire book, to put him in a worse light. GRR Martin said, that Baelor's weapon was a prayer and that he would have preferred to disarm the whole world. What maybe could have happened is the North or the Iron Islands starting a war against Baelor because of the religion, and he would be partly responsible. That I'll grant. But otherwise there's no proof at all, that he planned a holy war.

not specifically but there are a few things we can infer, for example they typically only go by there given name and don't seem to marry. A few a speculated they could be similar to a knight's vow. When it became obvious that Baelor would father no heirs and the Iron Throne would pas to his line, the first thing Viserys should have done was arrange for his deprave degenerate son to have an unfortunate accident. Think of how much grief that would have spared the realm.
@williamdaniels9728

Damon Blackfyre is so obviously Baelor's son that was somehow consummated with Daena. Think about it logically, why would a pious man need to literally "lock up" his sisters if he had no desires of them? Daena's namesake "The Defiant" is literally because she broke out so much and "wanted" to consummate her marriage with Baelor. It's all there in Fire & Blood or the ASOFI wiki if you care to know more. Baelor obviously didn't want to bed his sister and tried his best not to but in the end that's what happened somehow. It seems like he was intentionally trying not to have an "heir" and the only logical reason I can seem to think of is because he has some sort of prophetic dragon vision that his heir-son (if he were the have one) would tear the realm apart so in order to avoid that possible future he tried to make himself celibate, but it didn't work because of Daena's determination and obsession to "consummate". Why else would a pious man fast himself to death over the birth of sister's son if it was some other man's sins or responsibility? It doesn't make sense, and it only makes sense if it was HIS son that was born and he felt guilt for this. Viserys or Daena came up with the plan to pass Damon off as one of Aegon's many bastards. I think she probably slept with Aegon after bedding Baelor to give Aegon The Unworthy the illusion the child was his when in reality she was already pregnant with Baelor's child (Damon Blackfyre) - maybe Aegon The Unworthy always knew the child wasn't his? In addition to all this and to complicate things further Dareon II isn't actually Aegon's son either but the son of Aemon The Dragon Knight and his sister Nerys, that one is more widely known. The end result is Dareon is older, wiser, a smaller framed guy and seemingly a good person & politician is actually a love child bastard doing his best to hold the throne and the kingdom together and all while bringing Dorne into the fold (something not even Aegon The Conqueror could do) and Damon Blackfyre is the younger warrior knight, popular everywhere and liked by all who doesn't know until much later in the story that he is actually the rightful heir to the throne and technically has a higher claim than Dareon. Aegon threatened Dareon multiple times to disinherit him and may have been the motive Dareon needed to kill Aegon and take his place and basically go about the business of putting the kingdom back together after Aegon trashed it. Really Aegon's only sons are the two that hated each other and worked around both Dareon & Damon in the background and that was Bryden Rivers and Aegor Bittersteel.

Holy shit... I gotta ask,when Baelor rescued Aemon.was he really bitten by the snakes? He could have died there in the pit but he lived
@williamdaniels9728
@williamdaniels9728 3 ай бұрын
@@louisekenway3455 Well he had to be bitten by the snakes because Aemond Dragonknight threw him over his shoulder and he was in a coma for weeks to months so yeah I'd say he definitely got bit by those snakes. But the real miracle is that he somehow survived both the walk to Dorne and the snake bites. When he awoke from that coma he became even more fanatical in his Andal (faith of the seven) actions & beliefs. Possibly he was spurred on by his survival believing it the will of the gods. What's even more fascinating is with HOTD Velaryons being black on the show this means Dareon I (The Daring) , Baelor, his sisters and possibly Damon Blackfyre (if he is Baelor's son) are all bi-racial and of a higher Velaryon ethnic percentage than the platnium "white" targ dominant genes that carried on in Viserys II & Aegon The Unworthy, Aemond Dragonknight, Dareon II, Egg, Mad King, Rhaegar, Danerys. With later generations having added Dornish to the gene pool. It seems to me as if Brynden Rivers (three eyed raven) while he was on his feet was purposely trying to eliminate the Velaryon line for some reason by declaring for Dareon II and trying to kill all the Blackfyre's. Maybe something to do with prophecy (as usual)

i think one of the main reasons why Viserys could have set this up was to prevent Baelor's image as pious being maculated in the eyes of the smallfolk who loved him
@williamdaniels9728
@williamdaniels9728 3 ай бұрын
@@eduardoshinel4679 Exactly. Viserys II is described like a Tywin or Otto. Also a hand to multiple kings. This dude was saavy & smart. He had three motivations. To preserve Baelor's image & character and public disgrace. To ensure there would be no more future divisions or wars with "the faith of the seven" or smallfolk, and most importantly to secure his & his sons (Aegon The Unworthy) line to the throne. An interesting detail with the Velaryon's being black on the show means that Baelor, his brother Dareon I (the daring) and Baelor's sisters (and possibly Daemon Blackfyre) were all bi-racial Targaryens while Visery II & Aegon The Unworthy came from Rhanera & Daemon's line so they have the platnium white Targ features that carried on to Dareon II, Egg, The Mad King, Rhaegar, Danerys.

No, it would have to be a tossup. We know that she was sleeping with Aegon the Unworthy enough to at least convince him it was his son. Of course, naturalizing your bastard because he's everything you wanted in a son, whilst simultaneously rejecting your true born son/accusing him of being the result of an affair because he fails to live up to that standard, and then finding out that the bastard was not yours, and the true born son was; IS classic GRRM irony.

People like to throw the term "mad" around a lot in the ASOIAF-fandom, but, much like in the real world, "madness" doesn't exist in Westeros. What we call "madness" or - in our world - "mental illness", is just a throwaway term for "unconventional behaviour".... mostly for an otherwise normal aspect of human behaviour that got pushed to it's extreme: distrusting people you don't like is normal, but Aerys II distrusted everyone who didn't promise him heaven.... people search for higher meaning, but Baelor overused it as a coping mechanism. Especially people in positions of power will oftentimes succumb to overdoing such things, since they rarely face people who are "allowed" to pull them straight. THIS is Targaryan madness, not some weird inexplicable curse.
