In this day/week/weekend in my gay/lgbt/lgbtq+ life in Japan, I visited my ex-homophobic dad for the first time since I came out to him in December. It's been such a growth process for everyone involved. This is also Stewie's first time back in Shizuoka since he left, so it was just a rollercoaster of emotions. I'm glad we all got to spend time with each other! Happy Pride!

The fact that Steven stood next to them the whole time with a happy little smile radiates so much of a comfort scene to me. My older brother and me were brought up from a tough love asian household, our parents hardly reveal much affection. We grew up touch starved, especially my brother, when he's a men, his world view would be even harder than mine. I'm practicing to heal and be more affectionate towards people who I value highly, esp my narcissistic mom who's showing a sense of aware these days and I think I should give her a chance. Shout out to courageous people who's breaking the cycle like Stan :) I hope things will turn out okay, If it's not okay, it's not the end.

As a parent with a gay son, you guys have to understand that it also takes a lot change in mindset and adjustment on the part of the parent. In fact I had always thought of myself as a progressive thinker and accepting of different genders but hits different if it involves your children. So just give them a bit of time to get them to accept it.

My Mom was always a liberal with one of her best friends being a lesbian. I was more worried coming out to my Father than her. But when I came out to her as bisexual (I found out later I was actually pansexual I just didn’t know a name for it) she cried and begged me to reconsider. It hurt so bad… It made our relationship strained and I felt like I lost my loving Mom. She always imagined me having a boy to love. And when my first love was a girl she flipped. Later on when she digested it more she realized she was being hurtful. And she apologized years later. I ended up with a love from elementary school who is in fact a boy not a girl and he’s also pansexual. We fell in love with each other’s hearts not body’s. We’ve been together for 10 years and he asked me to marry him. Some parents need time to come around. And some are accepting right away. Some never try to change. I’m lucky mine saw reason. Ps. If you’re a parent reading this who can’t seem to accept your child being different please know it’s not a choice. They are that way for a reason and they trusted you to tell about their big life news.

Watching them mend their relationship with their dad has really inspired me to also become closer with my dad. My dad is the type of Filipino dad who’s always been more authoritarian and traditional, and being 2nd gen born in the US, I feel like we never saw eye-to-eye with our values. We’d always get into verbal fights when I was growing up, and I always thought we’d never get along for as long as lived! But as I’m getting older and am now living on my own, i realize how much I really mean to my dad.
