Saw the original video you posted about this technique and have been religiously following your regimen ever since. The results are so impeccable that even a pristine Kimwipe foolishly used IMMEDIATELY following the procedure does nothing except somehow pull a smear out of its KIM-ASS and make me chase it around the lens in vain until I finally give up, dispatching one last Q-tip to finish the job right. The only modification I can say I've successfully made is the subsitution of Everclear for the isopropyl alcohol... Gonna go have me a shot of "lens cleaner" right now as a matter of fact. Thanks a million!!

One of the best cleaning methods on KZbin. My only comment is you are rubbing the coating way more than necessary. The probability of scratching the lens during cleaning is directly proportional to contact time. The best cleaning methods minimize lens cleaning contact time. As a general rule dabbing is preferable to rubbing or polishing. I like your idea of spinning the lens. I use a 6 inch Lazy Susan with cotton swabs. It works great!

These are my favorite type of videos, thanks for posting. Do you use a different technique if you're cleaning individual lens elements? As for synthetic swabs as being abrasive, in my experience I've found that the swab itself is not abrasive, but they get really soggy when dipped in liquid and it's easy to scratch with the end of the plastic handle. Unless you're worried about particles/fibres being left behind cotton seems the better option like you said. I've used acetone->isopropyl->distilled water for cleaning that's pretty standard in semiconductor fab for quick initial cleaning. Acetone will quickly dissolve oils and organics, but leaves significant residue, so the alcohol dissolves that and is more water-soluble. Then the water finishes, and I blow dry with N2. Any reason to avoid acetone with photography lenses? I'm thinking of starting to do some lens repair as a hobby with some cheap "as-is" stuff on eBay.

I use your method all the time now. Forgot to like and comment, so I'm doing it now. Sharing this video with a friend as they asked me how to clean lenses properly. I modified your method a little bit by replacing the distilled water for steam from my kettle on the que tip. I found that 5-8 seconds of steam on the tip gives the perfect amount of moisture.

I just put mine in the washing machine with some sox, and then tumble dry on warm for about an hour. I helps to put a few handfuls of Damp Rid in the dryer, along with some rocks to help beat out the moisture. But you don't want to use dryer sheets. Those things are NASTY.

Interesting, thanks a lot for posting! One question: What's your opinion about 99.x % isopropyl instead of 70 %? My thought: regarding chemical cleaning power it would make no difference, but 70% mixture contains 30% of water, which then could find its way behind the spanner ring or even the front element if I'm not careful enough. After using isopropyl as a solvent for grease left by fingers and other dirt, what do I need the distilled water for?

I haven’t seen you do this with two Q-Tips at the same time on the last video I’ve seen you do. I actually have to take apart a YongNuo 35mm f2 lens. It came out of the screw in housing it was in a few weeks ago. I accidentally touched the front element and the inside element. I also have a Nikkor 50mm f1.4 I need to clean that has a little bit of fungus on the inside (I bought the lens off of somebody like that a year and some change ago). What do you recommend I do to clean the fungus? I let my friend borrow it and he said it doesn’t get as sharp as the one he has (he has the same lens also, only beat the hell up).

Take a piece of soft toilet paper, spray a bit of Zeiss lens cleaner, yes you need to buy it, and just wipe. Repeat if necessary each time with a new piece of toilet paper. And that is all you need to do. No need to spend so much time with q-tips, they are only needed to remove though spots.
