A few times over the years you'd catch the crossing red lights on the Great Northern Highway and so you'd park up and go light a fire and boil a billy and kick around some stones and watch the sunset and then go back to your car and warm it up for a few minutes before you could be on your way again.... And they say that Australians like to exaggerate all sorts of things.... Nah... We just say it as we see it.

Worlds strongest locomotive ever built: 2-6-6-6 Allegheny, w/ 12,000 HP at max, maybe more. Cool, right? P.S, it was a steam loco.
@douglasskaalrud6865
@douglasskaalrud6865 6 жыл бұрын
FutureTech - The future of technology, 52 Most often, steam and diesel locomotives are judged on the real work they do and in the railroad business that statistic is tractive effort. It's a measurement of how much weight the locomotive will pull. Boiler horsepower is deceiving because it's simply a measurement of how much steam a boiler can produce and doesn't reflect the useful work the locomotive can do. In Robert A LeMassena's book, "Articulated Steam Locomotives of North America," a trusted resource used by authors, each articulated's major statistics are presented and if you'll read it you'll see the Allegheny was not the most powerful. In fact, with a modest estimated tractive effort of 110,000 pounds, it wasn't even in the top 5. The Great Northern R-2 2-8-8-2 holds the title based on it's conservative 150,000 lbs. tractive effort. When limited cutoff was eliminated it went over 152,000. The Allegheny was much larger and heavier with more boiler horsepower but that weight and power didn't make it down to the wheels on the rail where a locomotive's true value is measured.
@hadesdescent6664
@hadesdescent6664 4 жыл бұрын
@@douglasskaalrud6865 I disagree, 4-8-8-4 Big Boy and 2-6-6-6 Allegheny were the strongest. Allegheny was for slow coal drag and up the grades, that tractive effort must be expressed at which speed you measure the tr,ef,!!!

Jacques I have to doubt that the (former) Robe line is 1300 km. I lived in Port Hedland during the early 1970’s when Cliffs Robe River were building the king from Panawanica to the port at Wickham/Withnel Bay. I would estimate the rail line distance at around 250/275 km. The Robe River Company was taken over by Rio Tinto.

@jacquespienaar4687
@jacquespienaar4687 5 жыл бұрын
Quite true, but we're not comparing apples with apples with apples, are we? The Sishen train of 1989 (7,2km 72000 tonnes) was operated on 3'6" "narrow" gauge (compared to AAR 4'8,5" gauge of the Pilbara lines) and covered a distance of 861km (compared to 275km) and without breaking it!! This is nevertheless an impressive achievement, but I would still like to see them emulate the achievement on "narrow" gauge.

A single mammoth steam locomotive can do the job, so as I was told by two senior men at a local hostel in India. They are NOT impressed by multiple diesel locomotives moving a train. But steam on the other hand can do it singlehandedly. That's what they told me. Therefor they consider diesel power as WEAK!

And then last month they had a train take off without the driver nd had to derail it just to get it stopped. Millions of dollars damage due to a spftware glitch. The driver set the emergency brake and was told to get out and go check something. However noone knew that the emergency brake had a time out of about 60 minutes and then it timed out and SHUT ITSELF OFF! So the driver was somewhere down the train and it started rolling away.

BHP Biliton was working towards these trains becoming driverless at this time and has succeeded as at 2018. Opposition miner Rio Tinto did so around the same time. There aren't many people who might be waiting for this train. It's in the middle of the Pilbara which is very sparsely populated. If you'd listened to the narration you would've heard that this was a one-off run to test equipment, limits, tech etc. and that it was over three times the length of the trains they operate normally. I believe you would only have to wait about six minutes for the normal trains. Not long at all, really. Do some research before you mouth-off next time, dude! :)
