I had the honor and pleasure to train with and perform on stage with Karen y Ricardo. They are the most down to earth people you will ever meet. I once walked by them practicing in an empty ballroom during a social at a Salsa Congress at 3:00am. They weren’t partying or drinking, they were training. They said, “No one else is training right now, so we need to be.” They used to dance in the streets for money when they were young and they have come so far and worked so hard. They are still the only couple I can watch to this day doing tricks and I’m not holding my breath thinking something will go wrong because a couple like this is flawless in their technique.

I am sorry to spoil it for you guys but this routine was simple. The spinning is not easy i have to admit, but in a competition with pros they would not get very far. Very athletic but very little salsa in it.

@jesus perez True. This "salsa" shown in the video might be on a high athletic level and well executed but that wasn't dancing. There is no soul in their movement, just a big show-off.. To repeat the words my boss gave me when I joined his dance school: "After I stopped going on dance competitions and joined the social dance scene, I then learned what dancing is!" And I totally agree with my boss - danced twice with some Latin Pro followers and it was awful. I couldn't express any musicality because they didn't get what it means to dance a break or to freestyle to music + they were grabbing my body, tossing me around the whole time as if I have the responsibility to keep their two feet on the ground! No fun

@@sraa1952 I know I’m late, but this is technically Salsa Cabaret, which includes more tricks and is deliberately more flashy. There is another category for pure salsa, which only allows you to do 5 tricks, and requires you to do a higher percentage of recognizable salsa

This is due to the concept in dancing, which is referred to as *"The Flower and the Frame"*, which is just as it sounds. The women are the flower, the men are the frame. The frame shall enhance the beauty of the flower, never letting it wilt, but instead making it fully bloom. Depending on the lead, the partner lives or dies. So, while the male's part is not visually as flashy and dazzling, he's fulfilling the foundation for the entire couple. Ballroom dance originated from party or social dancing. To perfectly dance certain figures is *not* the only aesthetics in competition. The essence of "Lead and Follow" is to have the leader (the Frame) lay out the footwork flexibly and flawlessly, thus having the partner pick up those steps. And while that easily makes sense, most dancers don't have the level of mastery and full-on response to body language that these 2016 *World Champions* have/achieved. Think of the huge difference between "just" swinging your partner around on time vs leaving an overwhelming impression on the judges and audience that's so good they don't even realize they *automatically applaud the dancers* until having clapped for several seconds, because that praise was drawn out automatically, almost hypnotically.
