Not taking away from these dudes and chicks, but fuck. Can you imagine what kind of balls and physique it took to surf this wave before they came out with the inflatable vests? Fuckin Mavericks, ghost trees , all them big wave spots. And like I said, I'm not taking away from anyone's tenacity and courage to still surf these waves, but God damn them dudes back in the day had literal balls made of fucking titanium. I was sort of in that camp too until I took three days to learn how to surf. I'm 36 and have been a climber (ice/rock) and backcountry snowboarder for a long time, and surfing whooped my ass a few weeks back! My shoulders and core were absolutely worked at the end of three days and I had to get out of the water when I was no longer capable of paddling anymore. I've been watching a ton of videos since I got bit by the bug and these people are animals. I'd highly recommend trying it out if you've never done it before. It's addictive as hell!

I was on a surf competition in the South West of France, with 6 friends and we were 67 participants, at some point I took a 30ft wave and I finished on the beach, but when I turned my back there was one of my friend taking a 40ft wave but he took it too late so he crashed from the top of the wave to bottom. His surf had hit his stomach and went thru it. He died not because of this but because rescue couldn't find him, he was drowning and his stomach was open so he didn't make it alive... Now every surfers who are going to surf where the accident was have to make a sign for saying sorry. It was the first accident that turn on to death here.

I used to surf when I could get to the beach on USA east coast, I rode normal-sized, fun waves but one day the surf was huge, I paddled out just to see if I could and I happened to be in perfect position to catch one so I went for it...as I dropped in and began to stand I looked to my right down this huge wave much taller than me that I was getting ready to be in front of and panicked and leaped backward off my board before I was fully caught in the wave. The wave looked like a monster that would eat me, I hadnt realized how different bigger waves were compared to regular fun waves, that was the biggest wave I ever tried, I still wish Id stayed calm and went for it. Now im too old and surfing days are over with.

I really find it amazing how those pro surfers are so excited and passionate about surfing while it is so fucking dangerous. I'll probably never understood this surfer mindset really. They put their life on the line just to catch a good wave. That doesn't make any sense in my opinion. But they are happy with what they are doing and nothing is more important than that. I dont understand either how you even can survive such brutal wipeouts and after you survived the wipeout how you can just go on with surfing and not be frightened and shocked by the wipeout. That's a mystery in my opinion. I hade a wipeout with a 5-6 foot wave, a joke compared to the waves here but it was shocking and frightening and I don't get how this can make fun at all...Surfing is fucking dangerous but many surfers are probably quite cool guys. They apparently just don't know what fear is.
