Learn how race, gender, and class intersect to affect environmentalism with activist, writer, and intersectional environmentalist Leah Thomas. She breaks down what intersectional environmentalism really is, why conservationists should embrace anti-racism, and how a single, powerful post on social media ignited a movement.
Thanks for listening and thanks again to Leah Thomas for joining us.

I'm an environmental science teacher and I created a whole new lesson around this post. The students need it and find the subject so much more engaging when they are introduced to the environmental justice movement, and now intersectional environmentalism, first.

@@ghostdetective311 low income, minority students have different views and experiences with respect to environmental issues than middle/high class, white students. I have witnessed this first hand and know that addressing the discrepancies gives validation to their experiences and we then can continue on with the solutions to the environmental problems.

@@ghostdetective311 also intersectionality covers A LOT more than race. So your bias is wide open here.

Intersectionality is string theory for Victimologists. Stupefaction ❗️ Hey dude how hard are those rails on that surfboard? If that was my choice of surfboard. I would have a square bake or diamond tail on it. That swallowtails just gonna slow you down.

YES!!! White - but have lived in Black/low income/integrated community in the NE quadrant of our city - unwittingly subjected my children to the schools here - exposed to toxic construction fumes/asbestos/poor educators/horrible counselors, etc. - and this is just in the schools! We are also down wind of pollution and have undervalued homes just to name a few.....

First of all, she seems like a very nice person. Let's get that out of the way. What she's advocating is environmental affirmative action. Okay, I guess, but she is also tacitly, not so tacitly accusing white environmentalists of being intrinsically racist because they support policies which bear the fruit of a poisonous tree. Poverty is not defined by immutable characteristics; it just means you're poor. Capatilsm has lifted more poor people out of poverty than any other mechanism on earth. The global rate of "extreme poverty" (defined as people living on less than $1.90 per day) was cut in half from 1990 to 2010. This is largely due to the expansion of the electrical grid and cheap forms of energy. Should I go on? Okay. Mike Brown, unofficial founder of BLM, was guilty of attacking a police officer and struggling to take away his gun. 'Hands up, don't shoot' is a myth; one that caused the rioting which apparently shaped, in part, her philosophy around the race/environmental issue (because tear gas?). The officer was a acquitted by a jury of his peers, some of whom were black, because the forensics didn't match the narrative. Lastly, it is disgusting to ascribe racism to anyone without evidence, let alone the default psychological setting based on the sins of antiquity. I realize it has become a trend, and silence itself is now racist (submit to the zeitgeist or be cast out!) but that doesn't make it true, decent or productive. How about we take the 'intersectionality' out of environmentalism, which is predicated on layers of victimhood, but also smuggles in the concept that white supremacy is endemic, root to branch, and focus on a communal, colorless, non-judgmental approach to global unity. Just a thought.

Equating Electricity for basic living, to Capitalism clarifies your understanding of Capitalism. I take you to live in North America and judging what the global south is exposed due to the "capitalistic" thirst for electricity and burning fossil fuels is done a number in my hometown on the other side of the world. I invite you to my home and i'll show you what rising oceans mean.
