I think the Brazilians are seeing airs underscored, while Ethan Ewings turns are getting higher scores. Smart for Filipe to surf that wave the way he did. If it was Ewing or anyone else it woulda been a 9 too. the criteria seems to be reverting back to turns over airs (unless the air is phenomenal and demands an excellent score). This is why Brazilians have been upset and there have been claims that the judges are moving away from progression. Thoughts on this?

What stikes me is the idea that progression is something that stops. It is also progression to, at some point, move past what we have been seeing. And, as it relates. I don't think most crying about the judging now realize the air game started decades ago. It is just that it is new to them. It all seems so obviously self important.

@@scottthomasen8978 I hear you. The assumption is that turns can't be progressive which isn't true. I personally like the shift to power/turns as long as the value of a good air remains. Both can be very progressive or not progressive. An air reverse on a 3 footer can be achieved by any 12 year old these days so I see why that wouldn't be scored. A solid turn is way more progressive compared to that.

Tolido picked the better waves,,,but Colepinto surfed with more variety and style .... and intelligence in choosing manoeuvres according to the wave development - shimmy stalls, and impossibly elongated cut backs that flowed were sublime Toledo... looked forced , playing to the crowd . a real turn off. And worse ... his moves were predictable. Ugly stuff that really turns people off the sport. Colepintos surfing superior rail game ,,,keeps you on edge as you dont know whats coming next that comes down to spatial IQ and creativity... cant teach that. Toledo was mechanical , aggressive ...in a word anti -cool...is this what competitive surfing has become
