Ma long just shifts gear in the last game and leaves everyone in the dust. He is a real GOAT! Congrats to team China. I also like to congratulate the German team. Without their top three stars, led by their new players, they still make it to the final. What an achievement for this new German team and Coach Rosskopf. Other than China, Germany, Japan and Korean are the other countries that can produce top quality players continuously. Wish that Dima/Franziska/timo can join Dang Qiu and Duda in another team match vs China. That will be an interesting event.
This tournament has shown very clearly that the standard of play has improved considerably across all teams, the gaps are closing, and the margins are extremely small, to the extent that much depends on the form of the day, the tactics employed, experience, and mental strength. Thus, it's not surprising that the top players can beat one another from 1 match to the next. What was amazing was that the only match that Tomokazu lost was to 63rd ranked Ionescu Ovidiu of Romania by 1-3 (8-11, 6-11, 11-7, 5-11). I will rewatch this match. My suspicion is, Tomo didn't know his opponent and couldn't anticipate well, to the extent that he was fairly static and was merely reacting to may of Ovidiu's shots. For me, the big surprises were Romania (2-3 against Japan), and India (3-1 against Germany). At 34, Ma Long is still the best and was the only unbeaten player in this tournament and will be called upon for the next 2/3 years.

I have rewatched Ovidiu vs Tomokazu. Ovidiu's tactics were simple but executed to perfection: short and soft returns to service therefore giving Tomo no power nor speed to work with (he thrives on speed & power), and fast flicks to Tomo's backhand. The Romanian coach is a genius.
@spaceinvader3842 жыл бұрын
Totally agreed. The Japanese have developed this tactic against the Chinese who traditionally execute excellent text-book loop drives. All they do is to punch/flick block (with fast reflex ad accuracy) to counter with killer speed then wait for forced error/chance to attack. If they don't get the feeds (spin and power drives) then they won't have the advantage. However, Chinese training still stay on the same style coz it's the most important way to be able to attack. Often see the Chinese players spend so much effort to win a match but we still admire their abilities, training and principle.

Only the Japanese who developed accurate punch/flick blocking game can counter the spinny drives of the Chinese, making them work much harder to win. But Harimoto has really improved a lot in this event. However, it's not the long term solution. Without the feeds, they are vulnerable too. indisputably, ability to adapt gives the winning edge, holy grail to championship.

Thanks for putting all of this up on youtube for free, really grateful for it. But I have to mention that the streams where all very hard to watch for me because they where seemingly running at 10FPS it felt like. I had a headache after every stream. In 2022 it should be possible to stream in 60fps ESPECIALLY in a high speed sport where its already hard to pick up the ball properly in the first place. I mean you can stream at 1080p 60fps with a low budget smartphone these days. Switching to 60 FPS gave sports like Icehockey a massive boosts because people where complaining for decades that its hard to pick up the puck on TV with low framerates. I feel like TT would also massively benefit from higher framerate video. Also the overhead camera used here made it impossible to pick up ball height and spin properly, much prefer the "tennis" camera angle or a mix of both instead of this one.
