I really think we need an alternate list of books, like "100 best books of the 21st Century you (and critics) have never heard of". Some of the choices were good, some were predictable, mostly they were books you've heard of, and there was a lot of repetition of authors

The first Ferrante on the list is not part of the Neapolitan quartet. I wish I could generate even a fifth of your certainty about anything. My only pushback might be that despite your incredulity Jesmyn Ward has written the greatest novel of the 21st century. Read “Salvage the Bones” and prepare to eat your beard.

The joy of watching you read the list in real-time is the slow dawning realisation that authors can appear more than once, and then you losing it more and more as you go. But yeah, it’s verrrrrry Pulitzer/prize heavy. And yeah, as much as I like a lot of books on the list, it’s very much focused on North America/Europe.

It was clearly stated that this list was the best books of the 21st century according to writers, publishers, critics, academics, librarians, and other professionals in the American literary field, not the most popular books according to the general public. They are currently working on their next list, which is just that. Anyone can submit their 10 best books. And His Dark Materials was published in the 90s.

You're right. A list of influential and best-selling books in pop culture would have been as awful, but at least not boring and predictable. And Hilary Mantel would have been on that one aswell, so it would be a win-win.

Very enjoyable video. The list is US focused, which I suppose is to be expected. The multiple book thing screws the list. You really should have be 100 different books from 100 different authors. Also 'best' v 'influential' v 'popular' is always a problem.

This list sucks so much. It's so US-centric it's laughable. I won't mention how few non-English language books are on there... Days of Abandonment is a standalone novel by Ferrante (my favourite but I still haven't read her Neapolitan series). I disagree about putting things likeTwilight etc on there though, best should just mean best, not most popular/best selling imo

@@KDbooks In fairness, if they put the individual Neopolitan novels, that might mean they’d have to pick specific installments. Do you pick compendium 3, 15, or 21 of, say, Vinland Saga? Too confusing. If it’s not printed in one binding, I doubt they can put a series in wholesale.

first I've heard of this NYT list. Looks like a lot of pulitizers on it which makes me think of the saul bellow character who called the pulitizer a dummy newspaper prize given by crooks and illiterates and maybe that's still a little true. Train dreams was a nice little novella and it was up for the NBA that year but they decided not to even award a prize for anything. Tree of smoke DID get it though some people weren't impressed and thought it would have worked better as two different bks. Liked a visit from the goon squad though not enough to bother with her sci-fi follow -up . Didn't get far with saunder's lincoln in the bardo but happened to pick up tenth of december cause that's my birthday and LOVED it. I mean two of the stories in it caused me to have BELLY LAUGHS for the first time in yrs from just reading something. I bought the entire mantel trilogy but decided I didn't want to read it until you said wolf hall was one of the best bks of the century. Now I HAVE to take at least one serious stab at it. Be well and stay out of the line of fire.⚛😀❤
