So one of the reasons these boxes are pricey is because of the print run. I used to manage a comic shop, and even though Zendikar was released first, we'd get more boxes of that over Worldwake from distributors. I'd imagine that had something to do with it. Also Rudy, as someone else who has opened boxes upon boxes of boosters between 09-13, tons of boxes would have duplicates of the junk rares.

Timmy got hosed. -scanner rudy These old boxes are not worthwhile, you could have got 3 modern masters 2017 boxes and opened non-banned modern money cards and still got death shadow. Rudy should make a video series where he talks about how reprint sets impact valuation of older boxes.

Jeff Li Well he did say in a previous video that one reason these older packs are so much isn't because if the value of the individual cards, but because of how few of the boxes are in circulation.

Plus there's the nostalgia factor of opening these older sets, sure you might get a bit nostalgic with the reprints of certain cards, but it's obviously not the same as opening an actual older booster box.

I chased a lot of Jace (no luck; hosetown) back in the standard Worldwake days and I can confirm, you open a ton of repeats in this particular small set. This video captures the feeling I had over the course of buying these packs when they were available.

I remember back before Jace got reprinted in FTV and the boxes were still terrible as all hell to open. To make your money back you'd have to get a foil Stoneforge Mystic, a regular Stoneforge Mystic, a Jace, a foil Jace, and a bunch of Creeping Tar Pits.

If I might suggest a pack-opening technique I've witnessed that is very clean and quick and safe. Holding the pack vertically with the flap facing you, place one thumb under the flap, close to the fold, and the other thumb close to the fold on the other side. Pressing your thumbs down towards the cards and pulling to the sides should cause the pack to open very easily.

Donovan Powell you don't. Unless you have the patience to put them all on ebay and sell them over about 6 months for a profit of like .50 cents. Unless you already own a game store there's no point. You could literally make more money just picking up change off the ground during those 6 months

The set had same great art, for sure. I still think Alara block has the best art in MTG history though. I just LOVE the stylized Grixis art. So much better than the CGI realism they do today. Also, humans are boring.

Can someone tell whether Worldwake was opened frequently during it's time in standard? I ask because it seems the supply of Worldwake cards are limited. I never see Worldwake printed cards at any of my LGS'. Supply is also low online as some cards I've looked for were not available at multiple vendors. It seems like this set wasn't opened as much as say Zendikar. Even my own collection have just a few Worldwake cards. I have more Alpha 10s that have been verified than I do any Worldwake stuff. I thought this was weird. Anyone else notice this?

You never open old boxes like this for value, because it simply isn't there. As long as you are okay with not making your money back, then it's perfectly fine to open boxes like this for the simple fun and experience of it. Some people spend $500 on a ski trip, others open a box of Magicy goodness.

Worldwake. The set that was out when I first started playing. Bought me an intro pack Rapid Fire simply because of the dragon. Got a Stoneforge Mystic and Celestial Colonnade in the boosters. Only found out that they were any good way later. Wow, just checked, why is Stoneforge Mystic $50? It was $15 last time I checked.

Can someone explain the Kaladesh invention Box thing to me, I'm pretty new and all I see in the comments are "floppy taco" this and "hose town" that.

Instead of going to hose town with Kaladesh, Rudy decided to buy floppy tacos instead and save the money inside that little box. Soon after, farmer rudy's attempted to grow a Serra Angel trap gf from the Eternal Masters boxes for creepy rudy, but it failed and the radiation from the card's paint affected the Kaladesh inventions box - granting it sentience of its own. Ever since this incident, the box mysteriously shows up in every video - sometimes in plain sight, looking for attention, sometimes hidden away, watching while you play with your balls. The legend says that in a future far, far away, future rudy will finally open the box, finding every single lottery card that creepy rudy took from timmy on his way to the promised land, hose town. That should amount enough money to buy future rudy a floppy taco in the future where only hard tacos are legal, and rare floppy ones have to be traded in the black market - under penalty of death. Duplicates are very common in Worldwake. Small set size. Makes it very easy to hit multiple duplicates. I have seen boxes like this one ... and I have seen boxes where they hit duplicates of the more desirable rares ... good old cardboard lottery man.

I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm all for subjective valuation and supply x demand determination of prices, and there's nothing "wrong" in a moral sense in people spending their hard earned money the way they see fit. What I'm saying is that the perception people have of how much is ok to pay for that specific product is overall quite distorted. Not only for this particular product, I think Magic overall suffers a lot from a "perception distortion", people charge what they charge and prices trend upwards because a lot of people just goes along with it, they never question like "paying 80 dollars for a single card? wtf" they just go "I guess it is what it is", then the next one sees others paid the price, so "it's probably fair to pay that". Very few people go "2,3k to play modern jund? fuck that shit" like me. It's not like there's no supply to meet the demand, the cards are out there, shit-tons of them. Anyway...it just baffles me.

Played back then. Got Jace in one of my early prize packs. Ended up amassing a full $1000 planeswalker control deck through packs, trading and singles purchasing from LGS. And honestly... felt gross to play that $1000 deck. Sold it off, tried to compete using cheaper decks like Mono Black Control that I was helping to develop at the time, and Turbofog that I also modified using Eldrazi and Time Warp. But there was just nothing to get a good record against all those $1000 planeswalker decks. Then I quit.
