Worm Gear Removal and Installation 1580 Bell and Howell 16mm Projector

Taking apart my 16mm Bell and Howell to remove the cracked work gear. Its a common problem and mine finally broke in two. This is a big job and if you live near a repair person for this procedure I would use them. But you may find some insight in this video. It's not easy.

I repaired dozens and dozens of those as a school system audio visual repair tech in the eighties up to 2000. When we ceased supporting film projectors, we threw out probably 16 pro jectors, some in almost new condition. lots of B&H parts and hundreds of lamps. Made me sick that we couldn't sell or give the stuff to someone who could use it.

Remember this thing, when you disassemble a gear before removing it from its seat you must mark the points where the teeth intersect with the teeth of the other gears otherwise the teeth will not be in their natural wear position and will produce a lot of noise.

This is why a worm gear replacement by a professional costs so much. Lots of labor time involved.

What was B&H thinking when they designed that worm gear? The replacement is a different material that diloesn't crack. Replacing that gear is no simple job. I've done several.

What would I do if I took it all apart trying to fix it and forgot how to put it back together again

The first thing you want to do is take multiple pictures from different angles especially if you're not particularly mechanically inclined before starting to reference later, also make notes or even record yourself describing what you're doing but the best thing to do is video yourself doing the dismantling.and most important, don't try to rush it, also make sure you do it in an area where it won't be disturbed and can be left alone especially if you have pets, a couple of my cats like to jump on tables so I have too work in a room where they can't get in, I have an older model I got from a vocational school that was going to be demolished, it is in good shape except for the worm gear, I even have a box of brand new lamps for it I bought on eBay, i want to do it one day but keep putting it off, I think the time has come to tackle it.

Sorry, but this was painful to watch. You definitely need the maintenance manual to do this as there are adjustments and settings that must be correct for this to ever work again….

Maybe it didn't work when he got it all put together and he threw it in the trash, that's probably why he didn't show it complete and running a film.
